Wheelersburg Wins D-3 Softball State Championship

Coach Teresa Ruby’s Lady Pirates of Wheelersburg proved their state top ranking all regular season was legitimate, claiming the Division 3 Softball State Championship with a 5-2 win over Tuslaw, Saturday at Akron’s Firestone Stadium.

(27-1) Wheelersburg scored twice in the first, third and added a single run in the seventh, while Tuslaw scored twice in the fifth.

Burg got their scoring in the top of the first inning with an Andi Jo Howard 2-run single that scored Haley Myers and Catie Boggs.

That lead held up until the Lady Pirates added two more in the top of the third when Sydney Skiver’s RBI single up the middle, scored Haley Myers for a 3-0 lead. Later in the inning with two runners on, Rileigh Lang flied into double play, but Macee Eaton scored for Burg’s 4-0 lead.

Tuslaw cut the deficit to 4-2 in the fifth inning.

Kaylynn Carter relieved starting Wheelersburg pitcher Andi Jo Howard after Tuslaw led off with a double in the bottom of the 6th inning. Carter retired the next three hitters with Burg holding their 4-2 lead.

Wheelersburg’s Macee Eaton connected on her 20th home run of the season with a solo blast in the top of the 7th for a 5-2 lead, that became the eventual final score.

Wheelersburg scored 5 runs on 10 hits, stranding 6 runners and committing 2 errors. Tuslaw scored 2 runs on 5 hits, no errors and left 5 runners on base.

The state title is the second for the Wheelersburg softball program since 2016.

Ghost Walk Volunteers Sought

Chillicothe – The Ghost Walk Committee is seeking volunteers for the 2022 event, which will be on Saturday, September 17th from 10am to 6pm through four locations in the Downtown area. This year’s event will showcase the ghostly stories about the Odd Fellows Lodge, First Capitol Brewery, the Bogg’s House, and the Majestic Theatre.

Volunteer positions range from gate keepers who assist with organizing groups of patrons for their tours, tour guides who escort the groups throughout the building, and storytellers who share the stories of the strange and supernatural that have taken place within each location. Volunteers will be provided with all information in advance of the date of the event to review and familiarize themselves with tales.

If you are interested in being a volunteer for this year’s event, the Ghost Walk will be hosting a Volunteer Drive in Yoctangee Park on Thursday, July 14th from 6–7:30pm at the Rotary Shelter house. The Ghost Walk Event is a fundraiser for the Chillicothe Halloween Festival, a 3-day festival that takes place in Yoctangee Park this year on October 7, 8, and 9. The Ticket price is $10 per person to tour all locations and will go on sale in August.

Proffitt State Pole Vault Title Leads Final Day at OHSAA Track & Field Championships

The conclusion of the OHSAA State Track & Field Championships has seen some top finishes for area athletes at the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium at the Ohio State University.

Westfall’s Peyton Proffitt won a state title in the D-2 Girls Pole Vault with a vault of 12’9, while Logan Elm’s Tayla Tootle was fifth.

In the D-2 Boys State High Jump: Zane Trace’s Lucas Ray comes in 5th. Portsmouth’s Dariyonne Bryan 6th.

Corey Schobelock placed 5th in the Boys 3200 run, with a time of 9:20.

Alan Austin of Piketon for his 7th place finish in D-2 Boys Discus.

Faith Yancey of Circleville placed 7th in the Girls 200.

Olivia Kennedy finished 6th in the Girls 400 dash.

Marie Souther of Zane Trace is state runner-up in the D-3 Girls 800 Run, with a time of 2:13.41, to conclude local Division 3 participants.

Paint Valley’s Cole Miller became the first area multi-medal athlete, placing fifth in the D-3 Boys 100 Meter Dash in a time of 11.08. Miller was third in the Long Jump on Friday.
