Adena Worthingtons & Ohio Village Muffins Prepare to Meet Sunday

Sunday, the hometown Adena Worthingtons will host The Ohio Village Muffins for their annual vintage base ball game.

The clubs have been going head to head since 2015.

While similar to modern era baseball, vintage base ball is played using rules from the 1860s when base ball was a gentleman’s game.

The hurler delivers his pitch underhand and while the umpire is in place, he’s only there to encourage the striker (batter) to swing.

There’s no sliding in vintage base ball, at least not on purpose. Often, a base runner will over run the base. That could be the quickest way for a runner to mark a hand (an out). If a runner successfully cross home plate, he’ll make way for the official scorekeeper to hoist the cowbell high and tally his ace (a run).

Defensively, spectators will note the players aren’t wearing gloves or protective gear. That’s because they’ve not yet been developed in the 1860s.

The afternoon is met by cheers and occasional jeers from the cranks (fans) in the crowd on the grounds of Adena Mansion.

Game time is 2pm, preceded by the player introductions and the official stone’s throw to see which team will take the field first.

Attendance to the game is free. However, the Mansion tours will conducted on Sunday, with the last tour beginning at 3:30pm. Admission for the tour is $10 Adults, seniors $9, children 6-12 $5 and free for ages 5 and under.
