Hamilton Sinks 24 in Unioto Win at Huntington

Article presented by Adena Health

Facing Unioto is a challenge any night… and when they get off to a good start, they can be downright unbeatable.

The Tanks improved to 8-0 atop the Scioto Valley Conference behind a 24-point night by Mya Hamilton for a 66-30 win over Huntington.

“I’ll take 24 any night from Mya” said Shermans coach Jeff Miller after the game on Litter Media RADIO. “She had a rough weekend at our two classic events – not shooting the ball very well and I felt like it was gonna carry over right at the beginning of the game… I pulled her off to the side and said ‘You can’t fix what happened in the past, you can’t look in the future, you gotta play – right now. Work yourself out of your slump’ and I think she did there in the second half.”

Coming off a close 45-40 win over Piketon Wednesday, Huntington’s Kyle Uhrig knew his girls would have their hands full in facing the Shermans in the Huntington Hills 24 hours later. “They’ve got some great athletes there and they make it tough on ya.”

The Huntsmen came out on fire, hitting their first three shots, but then went cold and Unioto began to pounce. “I felt like we shoulda been right there in single digits if we’d just make some shots” said Uhrig. In the first half, the Tanks hit 6-of-10 three-pointers while Huntington was 1-for-9 from that range. The result had Unioto ahead 17-10 after the first period and by the half, that margin grew to 31-17 in a hurry. Through the first half, the Shermans nailed 11-of-21 field goals. Meanwhile, the Huntsmen had a ton of missed opportunities, making just 6-of-25 shots from the field.

Defensive specialist, Maggie Holbert held Huntington’s Allie Baker to just 8-points. But Holbert wasn’t alone on the job, Keyairah Beard, Milee Smith, Charlotte Dennis and Aidyn Danison were blanketing Baker from the get-go.

Offensively, the Tanks began to roll. Beard knocked down four-three’s, while Smith hit for 17 along with Hamilton’s 24. The only downside of the night for the Shermans was seeing 2024 SVC Player of the Year Milee Smith roll her ankle on a put back attempt late in the game.

For the game, the Tanks were 24-46 from the field for 52% while Huntington made just over 21% on shots, sinking 9-of-42.

Huntington (10-5/7-4) is back on the hardwood Saturday at 1pm at Southeastern while Unioto (11-4/8-0) travels to second place Adena (11-5/7-3) at 7:15pm that night.

HUNTINGTON (30): Allie Baker, 8: Leah McCloskey, 7; Bailee Hauswirth, 7; Victoria Smith, 6; Savannah Bushatz, 1; Lydia Black, 1.
