Ohio History Connection To Manage Adena Mansion & Gardens

Article Presented By Litter Quality Propane…

(Chillicothe) – The Ohio History Connection is reassuming direct management of Adena Mansion & Gardens, the historic hilltop home of Thomas Worthington, father of Ohio statehood and Ohio’s sixth governor, in Chillicothe.

The Ohio History Connection has stewarded the site since 1946, but the Adena Mansion & Gardens Society has managed day-to-day operations since 2010.

“We are thankful for the years of excellent service by the Adena Mansion & Gardens Society, whose board and members have truly been dedicated to helping local history flourish at this site,” said Megan Wood, Ohio History Connection Executive Director and CEO. “This change is the result of our organizational goals to identify and promote high-profile sites as premier locations for visitors – and direct management is a critical step to doing that.”

“The Adena Mansion & Gardens Society would like to express gratitude to the Ohio History Connection for their partnership over the past 15 years,” said Don Gatchell, Vice Chair of the Adena Mansion & Gardens Society board. “It has been a rewarding experience. Thanks to our community, we have had the opportunity to share the stories of early Chillicothe and the Worthington family. We also have helped our visitors – including hundreds of schoolchildren, from as far away as Cincinnati – discover and rediscover our past and share these experiences with friends and family. Our board looks forward to the heights this site can achieve under the full-time management of the Ohio History Connection.”

The management change will occur by Feb. 14, which will allow the Ohio History Connection to prepare for the upcoming season. Public operating hours will begin in April.

“We look forward to implementing programs and events at Adena Mansion & Gardens to keep engaging visitors from all over the state, nation and world,” Wood said.

A National Historic Landmark, the mansion was designed by America’s first architect, Benjamin Latrobe. Construction was completed in 1807.

Visitors may explore the gardens, grounds and outbuildings and tour the education and visitor center to learn more about the site.

“The Ohio History Connection’s expertise and resources provide an incredible opportunity to ensure Adena Mansion & Gardens reaches its fullest potential as a treasured historic site,” said Melody Young, Executive Director of the Ross-Chillicothe Convention & Visitors Bureau. “We’re confident their leadership will enhance the preservation, education and visitor experience, allowing this important piece of Ohio’s history to continue inspiring generations to come.”
