The Circleville High School Athletic Department announced in a release Friday, pending Board of Education approval, Jay Sharrett will be the new Varsity Head Football Coach for the Circleville Tigers.
Sharrett, comes to his alma mater after 20-plus years as head coach of the Pickerington Central football program. The release states Sharrett “brings an unrivaled record of success, dedication, and leadership to the Tiger football program. He built a legacy as one of Ohio’s most accomplished high school football coaches.”
Speaking via text with Litter Media, Sharrett says his love for the game has its roots in Pickaway County. “I was very fortunate to have coaches that instilled a passion for sports in Circleville. Coach Cook, Coach Truex, Coach Sims, Coach Hamman, Coach Walter were dedicated to coaching and I grew under their leadership.”
Sharrett led his Pickerington teams to two state championships and three state runner-up finishes. Along the way, 17 Ohio Capital Conference championships, 8 regional championships. He was named OCC Coach of the Year 11 times. He has also earned the Central District Coach of the Year and State of Ohio Coach of the Year awards.
Sharrett brings to Circleville a career record of 211-42. He’ll be stepping into the Mid State League Buckeye Division which has been dominated the last two decades by Amanda Clearcreek, Bloom-Carroll, Logan Elm and Hamilton Township. Sharrett knows the building of a program begins with looking in the mirror for those wearing the wishbone C. A “renewed sense of purpose in Tiger Football will be our first step in competing with those very good programs.”
“High school football is full of pageantry and tradition” said Sharrett. “I remind every team I’ve coached every year about football’s place in a high school’s year.” For the Tigers it starts in the weight room soon. For the fans, it begins August 22nd with the Warren Warriors.
From the Athletic Department’s release, “Coach Sharrett is renowned for his ability to build winning teams and positively influence the lives of student-athletes both on and off the field.”
There will be a “Meet the Coach Event” for the Circleville Tiger Community, Parents, and Athletes on February 13th at 6:00pm at Circleville High School.
