Three Wrestling State Champs, One Runner Up & Three More Place Third at The Schott

The 2023 OHSAA State Wrestling Meet came to a close with Sunday with three local wrestlers atop the podium: Jackson’s Makenna Craft (33-0) in the Girls 100 Weight Class; Teays Valley’s Cam McDanel (42-2) in the Boys Division 1 190 Weight Class and Circleville’s Trentt Fulgham (43-7) in the Boys 285 Weight Class. Finishing as State Runner Up, Washington’s Brooklyn Wade (18-4).

Makenna Craft, Jackson (33-0) her four matches by pinning each opponent: 3:08 in her opening match, 2:28 in the quarterfinals, 1:40 in the semifinals and 3:20 in the championship match, beating Averi Wiley of Piqua.

Camden McDanel, Teays Valley (42-2) won opening match by a pin in 2:30, won by major decision 13-1 in quarterfinals, won by major decision in semifinals, earned a 3-2 decision in the championship match with Wyatt Ferguson of Oak Hills.

Trentt Fulgham, Circleville (43-7) won his opening match by a 2-1 decision, won by pin 3:21 in quarterfinals, won by 2-1 decision in semifinals and a 2-1 decision in the championship match over New Lexington’s Zane Pletecher.

Second place finisher Wade, a freshman, was pinned by four-time state champ Alaina Jackson of Minerva.

Two girls placed third on Sunday. Washington’s Lyndyn Gibbs (43-4) in the 120 Weight Class and West Union’s Scotlyn Adams (43-4) in the 105 Weight Class. Gibbs dropped into the consolation rounds after a loss in the semifinals, but managed to advance to the third place match where she won by a 3-0 decision. Adams took the scenic route. After losing her opening match, she won the next five, including a rematch with Teays Valley’s Ava Miller to reach the third place match. Miller finished sixth. West Union’s Leena Blanton also finished sixth in the 125 Weight Class.

In the Boys Meet, other top eight placers include a third place finish for Chillicothe’s Canaan Smith (51-3) in the Division-2 113 Weight Class, a sixth place finish for Westfall’s Gage Bolt (39-4) Division-3 165 Weight Class, seventh place finishes for Lancaster’s Cole Dickerson (47-4) Division-1 215 Weight Class, Teays Valley’s Joey Thurston (36-8) Division-1 285 Weight Class and Westfall’s Anthony Hoty (45-7) in Division-3 113 Weight Class, with a eighth place finishes for Zane Trace’s Zane Pickerrell (45-7) in Division-3 113 Weight Class and Vinton County’s Travis Bucklew (41-6) Division-2 113 Weight Class.

190 Weight Class: STATE CHAMPION – Camden McDanel, Teays Valley (42-2) won by major decision in semifinals, earned a 3-2 decision in the championship match with Wyatt Ferguson of Oak Hills.

215 Weight Class: Seventh Place – Cole Dickerson, Lancaster (47-4) Earned a 3-1 decision over Springboro’s Aiden Weimer.

285 Weight Class: Seventh Place – Joey Thurston, Teays Valley (36-8) Earned a major decision 10-1 over Midview’s Austin Dye.

113 Weight Class: Third Place – Canaan Smith, Chillicothe (51-3) & Eighth Place – Travis Bucklew, Vinton County (41-6). Smith reached the quarterfinal but then dropped into the consolation where he advanced with four victories by decision to finish third. Bucklew lost in the Seventh Place match by 4-2 decision to Bay’s Anthony Rocco.

285 Weight Class: STATE CHAMPION – Trentt Fulgham, Circleville (43-7) won by a 2-1 decision in the championship match over New Lexington’s Zane Pletecher.

113 Weight Class: Seventh Place – Antony Hoty, Westfall (45-7). Reached the quarterfinals but lost by 8-4 decision. Earned Seventh Place with a pin in 3:51 over Tyler Barnes of Delta.

126 Weight Class: Eighth Place – Zane Pickerrell, Zane Trace (45-7). Reached the quarterfinals, but lost by pin. Lost in the Seventh Place match, falling by pin to Delta’s Evan Hanefeld.

165 Weight Class: Sixth Place – Gage Bolt, Westfall (39-4). Reached the quarterfinals but lost by 3-2 decision. Lost in the Sixth Place match to Tinora’s Dalton Wolfrum by a 3-1 decision.

100 Weight Class: STATE CHAMPION – Makenna Craft, Jackson (33-0) her four matches by pinning each opponent: 3:08 in her opening match, 2:28 in the quarterfinals, 1:40 in the semifinals and 3:20 in the championship match, beating Averi Wiley of Piqua.

105 Weight Class: Third Place – West Union’s Scotlyn Adams (36-9) & Sixth Place – Ava Miller, Teays Valley (39-6). Adams lost her opening match with Teays Valley’s Ava Miller. The two would meet again as they worked their way through the consolation rounds. Miller reached the semifinals, but slipped into the third consolation. Meanwhile, Adams battled her way through the consolation matches and avenged her loss to Miller with a 11-2 major decision. She then pinned Columbus Academy’s Cece Reitter to win third place. Miller battled for fifth place, but lost to Lauren Ficker of Vermillion.

120 Weight Class: Third Place – Lyndyn Gibbs, Washington CH (43-4) reached the semifinals, dropped into the consolation rounds. Gibbs earned a 3-0 decision over Olentangy’s Cori Young to take third place.

125 Weight Class: Sixth Place – Leena Blanton, West Union (36-14) fought through the consolation rounds to finish sixth after losing an 8-2 decision to Sienna Sanborn from Hamilton Township, who finished fifth.  

235 Weight Class: STATE RUNNER UP: Brooklyn Wade, Washington CH (18-5) earned a 4-0 decision in her opening match, then advanced to the championship match with pins in the quarterfinal, 2:33 and 5:05 in the semifinal. Wade fell to by pin to Minerva’s Alaina Jackson (26-0)
