Lady Shermans Clinch 2023-24 SVC Basketball Title with Win Over Adena

Article Presented By Rathkamp Financial…

Unioto’s Lady Shermans defended their SVC Girls Basketball crown Tuesday with a 63-49 win at home over Adena, which is their 19th SVC girls hoops crown. The victory improves Unioto’s unbeaten conference record to (12-0/17-2) while the Lady Warriors slip to (10-2/17-2).

Both teams hope to have high seeds in Sunday’s Southeast District Tournament Bracket Seeding, with Unioto in Division 2 and Adena Division 3. RPI strength rankings will determine those seeds this year, not coach voting. Litter Media will have those bracket links available after 3:30pm 2/4/24.

In Tuesday’s win, Unioto blasted-off to a 13-1 lead, and never allowed Adena to cut the margin to less than 10 points the rest of the game. Unioto held advantages of 16-6 after one quarter, 30-16 at halftime, 45-30 after three, then the 63-49 final.

Sophomore Milee Smith led the Lady Tanks’ attack with 28 points and 10 rebounds and was named McDonald’s Player of the Game. Amaris Betts added a double-double of 16 points/10 rebounds, Magnolia Holbert scored 12 points to go along with 5 boards. Aidyn Danison had 2 points and Amelia Uhrig 1 point and 8 rebounds. In a side note- Unioto learned over the weekend they have lost the services of junior Mya Hamilton’s 17 points per game after she suffered a season-ending knee injury in last Friday.

Adena was led by freshman Marly Halcomb’s 21 points, which included 5-three point goals. Unioto’s defense was intense all night, holding Emma Garrison and Kiera Williams each to 6 points. Kamryn Sowers and Corinne Day each contributed 5 points and Caroline Corcoran scored 2 points.

Unioto shot 44% from the field on 25/57- including 3/14 from the arc abd were 10/15 at the foul line. Adena was 16/46 from the field- including 9/22 from the arc for only 35% and were a chilly 8/19 at the charity stripe.

Unioto won the battle of the boards, with 33 rebounds compared to Adena’s 16. Unioto committed 13 turnovers and Adena 14.
