Unioto’s Lucas Hanes and Mason Thornsberry advanced to next week’s OHSAA State Tennis Tournament with a win in the District Tournament Wednesday afternoon at Ohio University.

The victory was bittersweet because the Shermans had two doubles teams in the lower bracket of the District. In the semi-final, Hanes and Thornsberry knocked out teammates Charlie Lewis and Ben Thomas. They dropped the first set 2-6, but rallied to take the next two sets 6-2, 6-2.

In the title match, Hanes and Thornsberry scored a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Logan Elm’s Maddox Arledge and Will Higginbotham to advance to the College of Wooster May 23rd and 24th for the state tournament.

In the Singles Tournament, Waverly’s Caden Nibert reached the final by ousting the Frontier Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Landon Smith 6-3, 6-2. Nibert’s run was ended by Marietta’s Navarro-Steffen in the championship match, 6-2, 6-2. Navarro-Steffen advanced to the final with a win over Waverly’s Carson Nibert, 6-2, 6-2.
