The Frankenstein Experience: Chills & Thrills on Haunted Mountain

Article presented by Rathkamp Financial

The Frankenstein Experience at Haunted Mountain opens Thursday October 3 with a preview night at Sugarloaf Mountain Amphitheatre. It’s the first of twelve shows Thursday through Saturday nights, concluding October 26th.

Director Lee Crouse says the entire cast that participated last year is back. However, for those who saw the show in 2023 will notice some changes. Following a meeting with the cast, playwrite Rick Averill made some re-writes of the script, which Crouse says “he took the ideas that were presented to him, and did some re-writes for the script and came into town to see Tecumseh in mid-August, and we did a read through – they’re lots of fun. We’re excited to see how it all pans out this year.”

Crouse said Averill has a family member in Ohio’s First Capital. “He was able to see the show last year and really enjoyed seeing it in an outdoor environment.”

This year’s presentation will run just over an hour, beginning at 7:45pm.

Scioto Society’s Brandon Smith said Haunted Mountain grew from an idea presented by his predecessor, Marion Waggoner in the early to mid-1980s. “It was called Haunted Mountain and he had a lot of drawings done for that… and that was kinda the inspiration. I never expected it to go beyond what we did those first couple of years.”

Smith said the original Haunted Mountain was much different from what it’s become. When the production was brought to life, several volunteers, front office and board members put on the show. “We put together a small, grassroots, home built, backyard trail through the woods. And I really never had a vision that it would ever be anything other than that. It has grown into something much larger than that. It’s an essential part of what we do now, right up there with Tecumseh.”

The six-person cast from the 2024 edition of “Tecumseh!” is led by Caleb Johnson (Simon Kenton) as Victor Frankenstein, Tessa Luchtefeld (Rebecca Galloway) as Elizabeth, Richard Neal as Professor Walden, Tyler Cowdrey (Tenskwatawa) as Henry, Tasha Davis as Justine and Robert Neal as The Creature.

In addition to the play, Haunted Mountain includes axe throwing, an escape room beginning at 6pm, the haunted trail at 8:45pm and a different scary movie each night, also at 8:45pm.
