
Portsmouth Wins First-Ever Girls State Basketball Crown

The Portsmouth Lady Trojans put the finishing touches on a 2024-25 season for the history books Saturday at University of Dayton Arena, convincingly defeating Creston Norwayne 53-38 for the OHSAA Division 5 State Championship. The title is the first for the girls program at Portsmouth High School.
Amy Hughes’ (27-1) Lady Trojans roared out of the starting gates with a 16-8 lead after the first period and by halftime led 27-14. The story was no different in the third quarter as Portsmouth used an 19-14 stanza to pull away for a 46-28 advantage headed to the final quarter and cruised to the 53-38 final score. The Lady Bobcasts did outscore Portsmouth in the final period, 10-7.
The Trojans’ tenacious defense forced 24 Norwayne turnovers in the game, scoring 25 points off of those miscues. Portsmouth’s inside offensive attack was also unstoppable, outscoring Norwayne 34-14 in the paint and had a 12-3 scoring advantage off the fast break.
The Lady Trojans had four players scoring in double figures- led by Sienna Allen’s 17 points and 5 rebounds. Keke Woods and Hayven Carter each dropped-in 11 points, followed by Daysha Reid’s 10 points. Rounding out the Portsmouth scoring was Salem Allen with 3 points and 1 point from Bry Shannon. Portsmouth shot 22/43 from the field- including 2/10 from the arc for 51%. They added 7/12 from the charity stripe. The Trojans committed 14 turnovers.
(25-4) Norwayne was led by Ava Mailbach’s 15 points. Allie DeMassimo scored 9, Hannah Froelich 8, followed by Kendra Berger, MaKenna Heyden and Courtney Cline each with 2 points. The Lady Bobcats shot 12/37 from the floor- including 5/16 from the arc for a total of only 32%. They added 9/15 from the free throw line.
Portsmouth Girls join the heralded history of the Boys basketball program, which has won four state titles, with the last coming in 1988.
