Chillicothe Adds Speed Humps On Two City Streets

Article Presented By McDonald’s, “I’m Lovin’ It!”

(Chillicothe) – The City of Chillicothe is taking steps to enhance road safety by installing speed humps on Pawnee Road and South Watt Street. Unlike speed bumps, which are shorter and more abrupt, speed humps are longer and have a gentler slope. This design makes speed humps less jarring for vehicles at low speeds while still requiring drivers to slow down. In collaboration between Mayor Luke Feeney, Safety Service Director Jeff Carman, and Police Chief Ron Meyers, this initiative aims to address residents’ concerns about speeding and improve safety for both motorists and pedestrians.

The Safety Service Department received numerous concerns from residents about motorists speeding on these roads. A traffic calming study determined that the average speed was too high despite speed limit signs and regular enforcement. These speed humps are intended to deter speeding and enhance safety.

City ordinance 56-24, passed by Chillicothe City Council on September 9, 2024, authorized and funded the installation of these speed humps. Crews are expected to begin work April 17, 2025, and installation completed by April 19, 2025. Expect lane closures and traffic disruptions in the following areas: Pawnee Road, where three speed humps will be installed, and South Watt Street, where four speed humps will be installed.

Advisory for Motorists

While crews are at work, motorists should exercise caution on these streets. Motorists are also advised to use alternate routes and entrances/exits to local businesses while work occurs. Attached are maps of these alternate routes as well as the speed hump locations.
