Hopewell Culture National Historical Park Seeks Volunteers for Monarch Tagging

Article Presented By McDonald’s, “I’m Lovin’ It!”

(Chillicothe) – Join Hopewell Culture National Historical Park on Sunday, September 7th at the Hopeton Earthworks, 990 Hopeton Road, Chillicothe to help capture and tag monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus). As part of the Monarch Watch program, Hopewell Culture National Historical Park is helping a nationwide effort to study the amazing migration monarchs undertake every fall.

What to expect:
-Park staff and volunteers will demonstrate safe, proper techniques for capturing and handling these delicate winged marvels

-Each monarch will receive a special tag—a tiny sticker placed on their wing to help scientists track their migration to Mexico and back

-Lots of walking and running—bring water, sunscreen, and good shoes

-All participants must complete a volunteer form

-No restrooms on site

-Rangers will greet you near the parking lot and guide you to the sampling location and nets and free wildlife handouts will be provided.
