Unioto Starts SVC Campaign With 49-7 Win at Huntington

Article Presented By Herlihy Moving & Storage…

Unioto’s high-powered offense scored on seven of their nine possessions while their defense also shined in a 49-7 victory over Huntington Friday night to open the SVC season.

The Shermans had two turnovers, one of which led to the Huntsmen’s only score in the second period.

Shermans’ running back Cody Braden ran for 141 yards and scored three touchdowns on 10 carries to earn the Litter Media Radio McDonald’s Player of the Game honors. Isaac Coy connected on 8/12 passes for 205 yards and three TD passes as the Tanks compiled 424 total yards for the game.

The Tanks jumped out to a 21-0 lead as time expired in the first quarter. Braden scored from 7-yards out at the 7:47 mark. then added a 1-yard run with 3:32 remaining and Coy hit David Long for a 68-yard pass as the quarter closed.

Despite the early lead, Shermans Head Coach Matt Hoops told Litter Media RADIO, the Unioto defense has been ahead of its offense this season. “You’ve gotta give a lot of credit to Huntington – This is the first time anyone’s scored on us in the first half. Our defense has been really good and we just feed off those guys.”

That defense pressured Huntington quarterback Frankie Hirsch all night, limiting him to 8-of-15 passes for 67 yards. “He’s come a long way since his freshman year” said Hoops. “Two years ago, the game was going 100 miles per hour for him and obviously now, it’s really slowed down and it’s only gonna continue to slow down for him. He’s a great player. He was our main focus trying to slow him down to give ourselves a chance.”

Unioto’s defense held Huntington (0-1/2-2) to 172 total yards. Isaac Taylor led the Huntsmen with 55 yards rushing.

“Our identity is the run game and honestly, they came out and they hit us in the mouth and they were bringin’ their backers and they set us back a bit” Huntsmen Head Coach Clay Beeler said after the game. “We knew that was a tough team coming in. We knew we’d have to play an ‘A-plus’ game to get a win. But we thought we could’ve competed a little better.”

Huntington’s schedule doesn’t get easier as they host the Zane Trace Pioneers (1-0/3-1) next. “We’re gonna watch film tomorrow, we’re gonna fix our mistakes and we’re gonna prepare for Zane Trace.” said Beeler. “I believe our kids will have a clean slate and we’ll prepare for Zane Trace and we’ll throw everything we got at ’em … I think we can compete with anybody, just tonight, little things got to us and didn’t go our way.”

Unioto (1-0/4-0) hosts Piketon (0-1/2-2) next Friday. The Redstreaks fell to Zane Trace 42-6 to open conference play.

in the other SVC games, Adena (1-0/2-2) beat Southeastern (0-1/2-2) 33-7 and Westfall (1-0/3-1) blanked Paint Valley (0-1/0-4) 35-0.
