(Jackson County) – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Natural Areas and Preserves has celebrated the opening of its 150th state nature preserve. Jackson County’s Baker Swamp protects a large, high-quality wetland complex that provides important habitat for birds, amphibians and other native species.
“Today marks a milestone dedicating Ohio’s 150th State Nature Preserve,” said Ohio Governor Mike DeWine. “We have made it a priority to protect our natural resources, and this public-private partnership is a great example of how we can all work together to preserve Ohio’s beautiful lands.”
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to open Baker Swamp State Nature Preserve.
The Nature Conservancy (TNC) donated the 181-acre preserve to ODNR. About 200,000 years ago the preserve was once a part of an ancient river which disappeared likely because of glacial activity. Today the preserve harbors a significant buttonbush swamp.
“The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is committed to conserving native ecosystems and Baker Swamp has a fascinating history we must protect,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz. “This new preserve highlights a wetland habitat that is unique to the Appalachian region and we’re proud to call this our newest state nature preserve.”
Baker Swamp State Nature Preserve is a high-quality wetland complex and features a half-mile trail.
Not only is the preserve a haven for native wildlife like several bird species and fish like the lake chubsucker, but the site also protects six state-listed plant species including lance-leaved violet, running buffalo clover, and Virginia meadow-beauty.
“TNC has put a lot into collaboratively conserving and restoring this vital piece of land and turning it over to the people of Ohio ensures its ongoing protection as a part of the globally significant Appalachian landscape,” said Bill Stanley, state director for The Nature Conservancy in Ohio.
In 2024, TNC began a large-scale restoration in the preserve which includes reestablishing wetland, reforestation, and stream repair. That project is ongoing. When the work is complete, TNC will have invested about $546,000 into Baker Swamp State Nature Preserve.
Located about 10 miles south of Jackson in Jackson County, the preserve offers a half mile loop trail and a small parking lot. Future improvements include a new observation deck for wildlife watching at the wetland. To learn more, visit naturalareas.ohiodnr.gov.
