Huntington Captures Maple Leaf Trophy in Snapping Paint Valley 19 Game Streak

Article Presented By Pickaway Ross CTC Adult Education…

Isaac Taylor scores the game’s first touchdown. The Huntsmen took an 8-0 lead into halftime.

None of Huntington’s football players were born the last time the Huntsmen beat Paint Valley in their annual rivalry high school football game. That drought ended Friday in Huntington’s 36-0 victory, enabling them to return the four feet high Maple Leaf Trophy to Huntington High School for the first time since 2006.

Both teams came up with big defensive stops to keep the game scoreless until Huntington took an 8-0 lead at 9:31 remaining in the second quarter when Isaac Taylor capped a 77 yard/6 play scoring drive with a 3 yard TD run. The two-point conversion came on a Evan Thomas run. That would be the lone score going into the locker room at halftime.

The Huntsmen would add two touchdowns in each of the third and fourth quarters. Taylor made it 16-0 at 7:20 in the third period on another 3 yard TD run then added the PAT on a run. That was a 47 yard drive in 10 plays.

After stopping the Bearcats on a fourth down play on the PV 34 yard line, Huntington scored 7 plays later on a Evan Thomas 5 yard run at 2:37 of the third quarter. The two-point PAT failed for a 22-0 advantage.

A 69 yard scoring drive in 7 plays put the Huntsmen up 30-0 when Frankie Hirsch connected with Carson McNeal on a 47 yard TD pass. McNeal ran the two-point conversion in with 7:43 left in the game. Huntington completed the scoring at 3:30 left on the contest on a Isaac Taylor 40 yard TD run for the 36-0 final.

Huntington piled up 317 total yards with 233 on the ground. Isaac Taylor was named the Litter Media Radio “McDonald’s Player of the Game” as he scored three touchdowns and ran for 137 yards.

The Huntsmen defense held Paint Valley to 162 total yards and forced three turnovers. One negative for Huntington was 10 penalties for 80 yards, 9 of those in the first half.

Huntington improves to (2-2/4-3) while Paint Valley drops to (0-4/0-7).

The Huntsmen celebrate claiming the coveted Maple Leaf Trophy. It’s the first time since 2006 Huntington has won the prize.
