Highland County Health Promotes Heart Health Month

Article presented by Herlihy Moving & Storage …

February is Heart Health Month, a time to learn more about heart disease and how to keep your heart healthy. Heart disease is one of the leading causes of illness and death in the United States. It can lead to serious problems like heart attacks and strokes, but many heart problems can be prevented. Simple habits such as eating healthy foods, staying active, and seeing a doctor regularly can help lower your risk.

Physical activity plays an important role in keeping the heart strong. Jared Warner, Highland County Health Commissioner, says, “The city of Hillsboro has made great progress in expanding recreational spaces, including the addition of the new pickleball courts at Railroad Park. These spaces give our community more opportunities to be active and improve heart health, and I hope people take full advantage of them. I’ll see you out there on the courts!”

To help support heart health in the community, the Highland County Health Department is offering free lipid panel screenings throughout the month of February. A lipid panel is a simple blood test that measures fats in your blood, including cholesterol and triglycerides. These numbers help show your risk for heart disease. High levels of “bad” cholesterol can block arteries, while “good” cholesterol helps protect the heart.

Knowing your numbers is an important step toward a healthier heart. Anyone interested in a free lipid panel screening is encouraged to schedule an appointment by calling (937)393-1941 or visiting highlandcountyhealth.org.
