Boys Basketball: Steubenville Stops Chillicothe 64-47

Article presented by Accurate Heating, Cooling & Plumbing

Chillicothe (17-7) fell behind early in the Boys D-III District Final with Steubenville Wednesday night. The Cavaliers had their season end in a 64-47 defeat. It was Steubenville’s 18th consecutive win this season.

About the photo: Karter Williams gets a lay up for Chillicothe in the second half. The junior hit the opening basket for the Cavaliers, stopping a 9-0 Steubenville run.

The Big Red posted a 9-0 lead capped by Tre’von Wiggins’ three-pointer. It was the first of eleven shots from beyond the arc made by Steubenville.  By halftime, they’d hit 7-of-16 three-pointers and double the score on the Cavaliers at 34-17.

The closest the Cavs could get was 45-34 in the third period, but The Big Red attack proved to be too much for Chillicothe.

Santino Haney led Steubenville with 21-points, 7-rebounds and 3-steals. Cole Bowers recorded a double-double with 12-points on four three’s and 10-boards. The Big Red shot 46.2% from the field, 42.3% on triples.

Cayden Cox paced the Cavaliers with 22-points. Andrew Hamman followed with 11-points and 8-rebounds. Cooper Stoneking added 8-points, Karter Williams, 4 and Ka’von Pleasant 2 on a break away dunk.

Steubenville (23-1) will return to The Convo March 10th to face the Central District champion. Their opponent will be decided this Friday. Watterson and Columbus South will play for the Central District crown.

Marietta 53, New Philadelphia 36

Marietta (21-4) won the upper bracket District title defeating New Philadelphia 53-36 prior to the Chillicothe-Steubenville game. The Tigers return to The Convo next week in the Elite Eight.
