Adena Claims Regional Volleyball Title In 3-1 Slugfest vs Wheelersburg

The (24-3) Adena Warriors are headed to the OHSAA Volleyball Final Four after a (25-21, 23-25, 25-22, 25-20) win over (24-3) Wheelersburg Saturday at Logan High School. It is the Warriors’ 11th trip to the State Tournament in program history.
Corrine Day powered the Warriors to the win with 29 kills and 4 blocks. Katie Burns added 21 kills and 4 blocks, Jacey Jones had 2 kills and 1 for Jacey Smith. Kimmy Dalton anchored the Warriors solid back row with 32 digs, Jacey Smith had 19, Burns with 10, Kamryn Sowers 9, Kayla Grooms 8, and Addyson Wisecup and Kortney Sowers each with 4 digs.
Wheelersburg was led by Gracie Perkins with 19 kills, Alyssa Mullins 9, Laynee Walker 7 and Grace Woodward with 6 kills. Mylee Gleim had 22 digs, Woodward with 21, Ella Chamberlain 16, and Mullins with 11 digs.
The Pirates served 9 aces, while Adena countered with 7 aces.
Both volleyball powers battled throughout the match with Adena rallying from an 8-4 deficit and pulled out to a 13-9 lead in Set 1. Burg got to within 18-17 before the Warriors closed on a 7-4 run for the 25-21 win.
Set 2 was Wheelersburg’s in the early to mid set, taking a 17-11 lead on the Warriors. Adena rallied for a 23-22 lead, but Burg finished on a 3-0 run for the 25-23 victory to even the match at (1-1).
Set 3 saw the Pirates with early leads of 3-0 and 7-5. Adena battled back to even the score at 11-11, and later 17-17, before taking late leads of 20-18, 21-19. Burg closed the gap to 21-20 with the Warriors 4-2 close for the 25-22 win at a (2-1) lead in the match.
Set 4 again saw Wheelersburg with an early lead of 6-2 and later 12-8. The Warriors stormed back to take a 14-13 advantage, but Burg’s serving grabbed control back for a 18-14 lead. But then the Warriors hit the gas for an 11-2 finish for the match victory 25-20.
(24-3) Adena advances to the Division 5 State Semis against state top ranked and defending state champion (22-4) Mentor Lake Catholic at Wright State University’s Nutter Center Thursday at 6pm. Litter Media Radio will broadcast the match live, with airtime at approximately 5:50pm (depending on time run of previous three semifinals at Nutter Center)
