Adena Defense Creates 5 Turnovers In Gridiron Win at Southeastern

Southeastern’s Lane Williams opened Friday’s SVC Game against Adena with a 95 yard kickoff return for a score and a quick 8-0 lead after a two-point conversion. After that, the Adena Warriors’ defense repeatedly rose to the occasion, forcing five Panthers’ turnovers in a 40-16 victory at Southeastern.
Adena’s Fisher Schaaf got them on the scoreboard with a pick-six return from 96 yards followed by Cody Watkins PAT kick to cut the deficit to 8-7 at 3:23 of the first quarter. The Warriors would score on their next two possessions on drives of 79 yards in 9 plays and 61 yards in 5 plays for a 21-8 lead. Those scores came on a 10 yard TD pass from Darian Thomas to Colton Garrison at 11:18 of the second period and a Nathan Dreitzler 15 yard TD run at 6:52 of the second quarter. That remained the score going into halftime.
Adena scored on the first play from scrimmage in the third period when Darian Thomas connected with Joey Francis on a 69 yard TD strike for a 27-8 lead after a missed PAT kick.
The Warriors added scores at 6:41 in the third period on a 69 yard/6 play drive with Austin Magill’s one yard run, followed by a 45 yard/5 play scoring drive at 3:56 of the third quarter when Thomas scrambled and scored on a 7 yard run for a 40-8 lead. That activated the continuous clock for the rest of the quarter and most of the fourth quarter.
Southeastern shut the clock off with a 38 yard/5 play scoring drive when Caleb Cutright scored on a 11 yard run, followed by a two-point conversion run to make it 40-16, which was the final score.
Adena’s Darian Thomas and Nathan Dreitzler were named Litter Media Radio’s “McDonald’s Players of the Game.” Thomas threw for 98 yards and two TD’s, while also running for 44 yards and a TD. Dreitzler rushed for 113 yards and scored a TD.
The Warriors intercepted Southeastern’s Joey Pfeifer four times, with Fisher Schaaf grabbing two of them, with one being the 96 yard pick-six. The Panthers also had a fumble and 7 penalties for 65 yards. The Warriors had no turnovers and 7 penalties for 60 yards.
Adena rolled up 318 total yards, with 220 on the ground. Southeastern had 275 total yards, with 235 in the air on Joey Pfeifer’s 18/31 passing.
Adena improves to (1-1/3-2) while Southeastern falls to (0-2/1-4). Adena travels to unbeaten Paint Valley next Friday as Southeastern faces Westfall.
