Adena Sweeps Huntington For SVC Volleyball Lead

Article Presented By McDonald’s, “I’m Lovin’ It!”

(UPDATED 7:45am 9/11/24)
Tuesday SVC Volleyball featured a match up between the final two unbeaten SVC teams as the Huntington Huntsmen brought their (4-0/7-0) record to (4-0/8-3) Adena. The Warriors used a strong service game, swift defense and a couple of double-digit kill efforts for a (25-17, 25-16, 25-19) sweep of the Huntsmen.

In Set #1, Huntington grabbed a quick 4-2 advantage, only to see Adena go off on a 7-0 run for a 9-4 lead. The Warriors built their biggest Set 1 leads to 20-13 before Huntington shaved the margin to 21-17. But Adena closed on a 4-0 run for a 25-17 victory as the Warriors’ Katie Burns pounded 6 of her match-high 15 kills in Set #1.

Set #2 saw both teams trade leads with the Huntsmen’s final lead of 9-7 and tied at 11-11. That’s when the Warriors took off on another run of 10-2 for a 21-13 advantage. Adena closed Set #2 for a 25-16 win and a (2-0) match lead.

Huntington stayed close early in Set #3 and were tied 7-7, before Adena’s 10-0 run opened things up for a 17-7 lead. The Warriors traded points and seemed to be in control with a 23-14 spread, but the Huntsmen battled back behind freshman Brailee Hauswirth’s front row play to cut the deficit to 23-19. The Warriors used a time out, settling down with the final two points for a 25-19 win and the match sweep.

Adena’s offense was led by junior Katie Burns’ 15 kills, Corrine Day added 13 kills and 2 blocks. Caroline Glandon had 5 kills, Adyson Wisecup 4, while Jaycey Smith and Layla Halm each had 2 kills. Adena served five aces, with Kayla Grooms firing 3 aces. Jacey Smith scooped up 19 digs to lead the defense, Kimmy Dalton had 15, Kayla Grooms 13, and Kamryn Sowers with 9 digs.

Huntington was led by senior Kaci Carroll’s 11 kills and 8 digs, Brailee Hauswirth had 8 kills, Allie Baker 6, Roni Lytle 5, while Kayla White and Lydia Black each added 2 kills.

The Warriors improve to (5-0/9-3) and conclude the SVC first round with matches at Paint Valley and Piketon. Huntington drops to (4-1/7-1) and closes the round with Piketon, then once beaten Unioto.

The Shermans improved to (4-1) in the SVC with a (25-7, 25-23, 25-14) sweep over Piketon.
