NEW LEXINGTON DEFEATS ZANE TRACE (25-17, 21-25, 25-17, 25-18)
(23-2) New Lexington used their length at the net to overpower (19-6) Zane Trace in the second district final of the day Saturday in Waverly. The Panthers appeared as if they were on a mission to gain the crown as they fell short last season in a loss to Adena. The Pioneers, who were district champs last season, close as runner-up this season.
New Lex had three players in double digit kills, lead by 5’10 senior Chloe Dick with 20. 5’8 senior Caroline Dupler added 12, with many of them coming from the outside on sharp cross-court shots. 5’10 senior Lena Finck added 10. Layla Baker swatted 7 kills, setter Jorja Burkhart had 2. 6’3 sophomore Ava Snedecker was held to only one kill, but smothered 4 blocks for the match. The Panthers served 8 aces on the day.

The Pioneers had one player in double digits as 6’0 sophomore Karlee Snavely powered 18 kills. 6’3 Emma Houston had one of her better matches of the season, drilling 9 kills from her left-front position. Sophomore Kerrigan Hill contributed 5 kills, with Kailee Johnson and Carlee Conaway adding 1 kill each. Johnson did have 3 blocks and Snavely with 1. (We did not have access to digging stats)
ZT dug a deep hole for themselves in Set 1 as New Lexington darted out of the gate for a 12-2 lead, before the Pioneers kicked it into gear and got as close as 15-14. However, the Panthers closed the set with a 10-3 run and a 25-17 decision.

The Pioneers serving game came to life in Set 2, getting the New Lex offense out of system. Zane Trace launched into a 9-3 lead and never allowed the Panthers any closer than 11-8 as they won 25-21 to even the match at (1-1).
Unfortunately for ZT, they could not keep that momentum as New Lexington got their offense cranked up in Set 3, breaking away from a 8-6 score when they went on a run of 8-0. The Panthers grabbed a (2-1) match lead with ZT needing a win in Set 4 to stay alive.
Set 4 remained close until midway through the stanza with the Pioneers holding their final advantage at 11-10. A 6-1 run by the Panthers was too much for Zane Trace to recover from- falling 25-18 for the match.
New Lexington will face Wheelersburg in the regional semi at 7:30pm October 30th at Logan High School, after the Pirate swept Alexander for their district title (25-17, 28-26, 25-21).
In other area volleyball title matches Saturday, Circleville won their first district title in 41 years in a sweep of previously unbeaten Gallia Academy in Division 4. Miami Trace was swept by Dover in the D-3 title match. South Webster and Valley won D-6 crowns, and Notre Dame and Eastern Meigs claimed D-7 titles.
