
Basketball: Zane Trace Boys & Huntington Girls Earn Wins Friday

Zane Trace and Huntington closed out their Boys and Girls Scioto Valley Conference Basketball schedules Friday night in The TWP with the Pioneers earning a win on the Boys side and the Huntsmen taking the Girls game.
Girls: Huntington 38, Zane Trace 31
On a night honoring its seniors, Huntington sophomore Brailee Hauswirth opened the game scoring 9 of her game-leading 17-points in the first quarter. Hauswirth’s start propelled the Huntsmen to a 16-7 lead through the first 8-minutes.

Huntington was held to just two points in the second while the Pioneers closed the gap to 18-14 at the half. The Huntsmen went scoreless for nearly 12 minutes. Tori Smith had the only Huntington basket early in the second period and they wouldn’t score again until Smith hit a pair of free throws with 2:19 left in the third quarter.
Meanwhile, Zane Trace chipped away at the Huntington lead to jump ahead at 25-22 through the third. Carli Clark hit a jumper to lift the Pioneers to their first lead since she scored the game’s first basket.
The Huntsmen got back on track in the fourth. Hauswirth scored on a three-point play and put the green and white back on top the next time down the floor at 27-25. Huntington closed out the game on a 16-6 run.
Tori Smith finished with 7-points for Huntington with Taylor Tisdale adding six and Julie Kight, Lydia Black and Lily Ary combined for another 8-points.
Brynn Snavely paced the Pioneers with 8-points. Haylynn Boggess-Pierce and Emma Houston had 6 apiece, Clark had 4, Maddison Will 3, Ava Gigley 2 and Kaydance Burkitt one.
Both teams will open post-season play next Wednesday. Huntington (5-10/10-12) will travel to Alexander while Zane Trace (2-11/4-17) heads to Chesapeake.
Boys: Zane Trace 58, Huntington 44
In the nightcap, the Huntsmen took the early lead behind Kalvin Mason who tallied seven of his nine points in the opening period to post a 14-11 lead for Huntington. Rhett Phipps dropped in a bucket to start the second giving the Huntsmen a five-point lead. That’s when Pioneer post man, Gunnar McCullough began to go to work. The senior hit 10 of the game’s next 13-points. The run paced the Pioneers to a 29-18 lead at the break.

McCullough led all scorers with 23-points. Grady Stewart had 10-points, Hudson Williams added 8, Lantz Stevens had 5, Jamison Hill, 4, Roman and Maddox Berry scored three apiece, and Eastern Branham had a pair of free throws.
“We kinda go as Gunnar goes” said Pioneers Head Coach Tyler Cassiday after the game. “He’s a coach’s dream. Everything you’d want in a player… He cleans up a lot of our mistakes on the perimeter and he’s such a versatile player, he does whatever we ask, makes it really fun to coach because you can do a lot of different things with an athlete like that.”

The Pioneers (12-2/17-4) will host Jackson in a make-up game Thursday. Huntington (8-6/15-5) will play Ross County Christian Academy on a date to be determined.
Zane Trace opened the tripleheader with a 40-37 win over the Huntsmen in the Junior Varsity game.
