Big Second Half Lifts Miami Trace To 44-27 FAC Opening Win Over Hillsboro

Miami Trace won the battle of high scoring offenses in their 44-27 victory over Hillsboro Saturday in a game that saw both teams amass 748 total yards at Tony’s Welding & Fabrication Stadium on the campus of Miami Trace High School. The game was one of more than one dozen in our area that were postponed Friday due to stormy weather in the region.

The Panthers displayed a balanced offensive attack behind the 186 rushing yards of Cooper Enochs, who scored on a 56 yard run and caught a 24 yard TD pass from quarterback Trey Robinette. Enochs was named the Litter Media Radio “McDonald’s Player of the Game”. Robinette also had a big day as he connecting on 10/13 passing for 117 yards and three TD passes.

Miami Trace took the game’s opening drive 65 yards on two plays, with Enochs running 56 yards for a score. The PAT kick by Levi Morrison put the Panthers up 7-0.

Hillsboro answered on their first possession, driving 61 yards in 7 plays, capped off by a Ryan Burns 8 yard run. Wes Bailey’s PAT kick evened the score at 7-7 with 8:03 of the opening quarter. The Indians scored on their next possession at 3:35 of the first quarter, driving 83 yards in 5 plays as quarterback Mason Dumpert ran 57 yards on an option play for the 14-7 lead.

The Panthers countered with a 75 yard scoring drive on 5 plays when Robinette found Enochs over the middle on a 24 yard scoring pass at 1:51 of the first period to even the game at 14-14.

The second quarter went scoreless until Miami Trace gained possession of the ball on their own 36 yard line with two minutes left in the first half. The Panthers took the ball down for a 26 yard field goal by Levi Morrison as time expired for a 17-14 halftime advantage over Hillsboro.

Hillsboro struck quickly to open the second half for a 21-17 lead on a two play-66 yard scoring drive with 11:43 of the third period. Ryan Burns closed the drive when he scored on a 26 yard run.

That lead lasted less than two minutes as the Panthers raced down the field on an 80 yard-5 play drive, scoring on a 20 yard TD pass from Robinette to Skye Salyers for a 23-21 lead at 9:54 of the third period, but the PAT kick was missed. Miami Trace extended their lead to 30-21 after recovering a fumble, then scoring on the next play on Robinette’s 29 yard TD pass to Salyers at 9:27 of the period.

The Indians cut into that deficit following an interception grab by Nic Burns and return to the Miami Trace 1 yard line. Quarterback Mason Dumpert scored on a 1 yard run, but the PAT kick was blocked for a 30-27 score at 4:09 in the third quarter.

Two unanswered scores by Miami Trace put the game away for the Panthers with fullback Westin Dawes scoring both, from 8 and 38 yards with 9:54 of the fourth quarter and 2:13 respectively, for the 44-27 final score.

Hillsboro’s offense was led by Ryan Burns 163 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Both teams committed two turnovers and penalties were numerous. Miami Trace was flagged 13 times for 130 yards, while Hillsboro had 7 penalties for 70 yards.

Miami Trace improves to (1-0/5-1) while Hillsboro drops to (0-1/2-4).
