Bishop Flaget Teachers Honored With Governor’s Edison Award

Article Presented By Classic Brands…

(Ross County) – Bishop Flaget School recently earned the Governor’s Thomas Edison Award for Excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education, making this an honor they have received for the 18th year in a row. Fluor-BWXT Portsmouth (FBP) has partnered with them since 2017.

This particular award recognizes Ohio schools and teachers who stimulate scientific student research and extend opportunities beyond traditional classroom activities. Bishop Flaget is a fully accredited K-8 private school in Chillicothe, Ohio.

FBP Steering Committee Chair and Bishop Flaget STEM Board member Tim Poe said FBP has supported the school’s science fairs and provided funding for their technology lab.

“We are very proud of Bishop Flaget, their students, and their leadership,” said Poe. “They will soon have two decades of STEM education under their belt and we plan to continue supporting programs like this for the betterment of future generations.”

The school currently has an enrollment of 213 students. Assistant Principal Terrina Fahnestock, Bishop Flaget, was responsible for starting the STEM program at the school.

“We are excited to continue to be recognized for the hard work we put into our curriculum, and for our teachers to receive individual recognition as they are the foundation of what we do,” Fahnestock said. “We are especially thankful for our business partners, including FBP, who continue to give their time and resources to help educate our students.”

In addition to funding, FBP contributes ideas that can be incorporated into the school’s STEM program.

“It’s a collaborative success,” FBP Community Relations Lead and Bishop Flaget STEM Board member Deneen Garner said. “We share ideas (like hosting a smaller-scale Science Alliance at an elementary school level), provide mentors and science fair judges, attend STEM training, and help complete documentation to renew their accreditation.”

Approximately 200 students participate in STEM programs at Bishop Flaget each year.
