Washington, CH – The Fayette County Board of Health announces the retirement of William Stevenson, MD, a dedicated member whose service has left a lasting mark on our community’s public health.
Dr. Stevenson assumed his role on the Board during a period of transition, stepping in to fill the vacancy left by the late Dr. Albert Gay. Though his path to public service was born of circumstance, his commitment proved unwavering.
A distinguished surgeon with over four decades of medical experience, Dr. Stevenson earned his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry from Denison University in Granville, Ohio, in 1977, followed by his Doctor of Medicine from Ohio State University in 1981. He completed his surgical internship, residency, and a fellowship in transplantation at the University of Pittsburgh before going on to serve as Chief of Liver Transplantation at the University of Virginia and later Chief of Transplantation at St. Luke’s Hospital in Milwaukee. He has been a pillar of Adena Fayette Medical Center (formerly Fayette County Memorial Hospital) since 2006.
When asked about his proudest moment on the Board, Dr. Stevenson pointed to a challenge that tested communities nationwide. “I am proud of the way the Board of Health responded to the COVID epidemic,” he said.
As for what comes next, Dr. Stevenson is keeping his options open, noting he is considering at least a partial retirement in the coming year.
The Board of Health extends its deepest gratitude to Dr. Stevenson for his expertise, his steadiness, and his years of dedication to this community.
