Article presented by Herlihy Moving & Storage

Unioto 50, Zane Trace 47

The Unioto Shermans nipped the Pioneers Friday in a barn burner at Zane Trace, 50-47. The Shermans got a 3-point buzzer beater from Jack Welch to close out the first half. Welch’s shot erased a 19-10 deficit as the Tanks ended the half on a 10-0 run.

The two clubs, tied at 35 through three quarters, exchanged leads throughout the second half. Unioto held four-point margins twice in the fourth quarter, but both times the Pioneers hit three-pointers to pull back within a point at 44-43 and 46-45 but failed to get back on top. Zane Trace closed to 48-47 in the final seconds, but the Shermans’ Blake Fitch sealed the victory with a pair free throws.

The Shermans (5-0) have sole possession of the Scioto Valley Conference lead ahead of Zane Trace (4-1) and Huntington (4-1). Unioto hosts the Huntsmen Tuesday while the Pioneers are home with McClain on Tuesday.

Miami Trace 54, Chillicothe 47

The Panthers gained an advantage in the Frontier Athletic Conference with a 54-47 win at Chillicothe’s Hatton memorial Gymnasium.

The Cavaliers owned the opening period 14-7 behind Cooper Stoneking’s 8-points, but Miami Trace battled back and held a 23-22 lead at the break. By the end of the 3rd period, the Panthers had extended its lead to 40-30. Chillicothe cut the margin to 44-41, but Miami Trace maintained a two-possession separation the remainder of the game.

Stoneking’s 13-points led Chillicothe and Caydon Cox added 12. Miami Trace’s Adam Guthrie led all scorers with 17 and Gage Bowers added 13.

The Panthers (4-0) are back home Tuesday with Jackson, while Chillicothe (4-1) hosts Franklin Heights on Monday.
