(Ross County) – In 2024, the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities awarded counties across the state grant funds through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). This effort aimed to increase inclusivity and make public spaces more accessible for all families. As a recipient of these grant funds, the Ross County Board of DD/Pioneer Center worked throughout 2024 on the installation of permanent, adult-sized changing stations at a variety of public locations throughout the county.

“We wanted these changing stations to be available in locations throughout the county that individuals with disabilities visit frequently,” says Amy Beeler, Superintendent of the Pioneer Center. “We found that many businesses and organizations were enthusiastic about becoming partners in this effort.”
Current partners of this project include the YMCA of Ross County, The Ross County Fairgrounds, Mighty Children’s Museum, Ohio University Chillicothe – Shoemaker Center, VA Memorial Stadium, Camp Cattail & the Chillicothe and Ross County Public Library. A station was also installed in the front lobby at the Pioneer Center offices on Main Street that is open to the public during business hours. Three additional stations are set for installation in 2025 that aim to provide accessibility in local parks and tourist locations.
The installation of these changing stations will improve the quality of life for residents, encourage families and individuals to participate in community events & activities and make a Ross County a more accessible place to visit.
