Chillicothe Kiwanis Seeks Nominations for Ohio Statehood Day Achievement Award

Article presented by Herlihy Moving & Storage and Ross-Chillicothe Convention and Visitors Bureau

CHILLICOTHE — The Chillicothe Kiwanis Club is accepting nominations for the 2026 Ohio Statehood Day Achievement Award.

The Ohio Statehood Day Achievement Award is given to someone who embodies the “Spirit of Ohio” by advancing the ideals of the brotherhood of mankind, community service endeavors, love of family and youth, concern for the beauty of the region and spiritual growth of the soul. Since 1969, the award has honored community leaders, educators, service champions, and citizens.

Nominations should include the nominee’s name, contact information, and a brief statement describing how the individual exemplifies the “Spirit of Ohio”. The committee will consider the nominee’s contributions to society, recognition in his or her field of endeavor, and overall accomplishments. Submissions must be received by February 14, 2026, and can be sent to Andrea Carroll at acarroll@rossdd.org. A nomination form is available on the Chillicothe Kiwanis Facebook page or where tickets are sold but are not required.

Last year’s award recipient was Robert (Bob) Leach, who dedicated his life to serving others—through his leadership as a retired Lt. Colonel, his impact on education, and his unwavering commitment to veterans and military-related community projects. His legacy of service continues to inspire and uplift the community.

“The Ohio Statehood Day Achievement Award is one of the most meaningful traditions in our community,” said Amy Beeler, President of the Chillicothe Kiwanis Club. “Each year, this award allows us to honor individuals whose lives reflect service, compassion, and a deep commitment to the values upon which Ohio was founded.”

The award will be presented at the 59th Annual Statehood Day Prayer Breakfast, which commemorates March 1, 1803, when Ohio’s newly sworn officials gathered in Chillicothe, the state’s first capital, for their inaugural session. Pioneer minister Rev. James Finley opened this historic first session with a prayer seeking divine guidance for Ohio’s new government—a tradition that continues today. In 1967, the Chillicothe Kiwanis Club and Ross County Ministerial Association began co-sponsoring this event to commemorate Ohio’s founding.

Since Ohio Statehood Day falls on a Sunday this year, the breakfast will be held the following Saturday, March 8, 2026, at the First Presbyterian Church, 13 Mead Drive, Chillicothe. Doors open at 8:00 a.m., breakfast begins at 8:30 a.m. and the program starts sharply at 9:00 a.m.

The cost is $20 per person. Tickets are available from a local Kiwanian, the Ministerial Association, Ross-Chillicothe Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, Ohio State University Extension, Ross County Service Center and Event Brite (additional fee).
