Circleville Rallies To Defeat Westfall

The Circleville Tigers stormed back from an 11 point third quarter deficit and used an 11-0 close to beat the Westfall Mustangs 60-57 Friday in the nightcap of the Inaugural Brad Morris Classic. Tigers’ 6’4 junior Riley Jenkins scored 17 of his game-high 24 points in the second half to propel the victory.
Westfall led most of the game as they stormed-out to a 12-5 start before Circleville cut the margin to 14-11 to end the first quarter. By halftime, the Mustangs held their third seven-point lead of the contest for a 29-22 advantage on a put-back bucket by Rick Hanley to end the half.

The third quarter saw the Mustangs stretch their advantage to 37-26, but the Tigers closed on a 21-9 run for a 47-46 lead after three periods. Westfall grabbed the momentum back with an 11-2 run for a 57-49 lead. But, Circleville swung back in a huge way, finishing the game on a 11-0 blitz for the 60-57 victory. Westfall had the ball to close the game, but their final three-point effort was blocked to end the contest.
Circleville’s Riley Jenkins was the Litter Media Radio “McDonald’s Player of the Game” with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Jack Kline contributed 13 points, Ed Kirk and Kole Nungester each had 9 points and 7 rebounds. Blain Fowler pitched-in 2 points and Drew Thornsley 1. Tigers’ Coach Evan Callihan praised the defensive efforts of Thornsley and Kiser Cassidy for slowing down some of Westfall’s top scorers.
The Mustangs were led by Jacob Hicks with 16 points, Joe Wray had 12, Bryan Craig 10, Haden Rigsby 6, Ethan Rose 4, Nate Wolfe 4, Brock Williams and Rick Hanley 2 each, and Caleb Lowe with 1 point.
The Tigers shot 20/61 from the field- including 6/12 from the arc for a total of 33%. Westfall shot 22/50- including 6/16 for a total of 44%. Westfall committed 15 turnovers to Circleville’s 9, and the Tigers won the rebounding battle 29-25.
Circleville improves to (6-3) overall while Westfall slips to (5-4). Day 2 of the Brad Morris Classic will be at Logan Elm High School Saturday afternoon with Circleville boys and girls playing Teays Valley and Westfall’s two varsity squads facing Logan Elm.
