PIKETON, OH– Scholarship judges at Fluor-BWXT Portsmouth (FBP) in Piketon recently reviewed 60 applications for the second annual Diversity Council scholarship and awarded two $2,000 college scholarships. Graduates Sawyer Grace Baker, of South Webster High School, and Kendra Allen, of Chillicothe High School, won the scholarships and are both seeking degrees in medical fields.
Selections were made based on essays, grade point average, extracurricular activities, and volunteer work.
“We graded all the applications on the same criteria and these two stood out. I thought both candidates were great and deserved the scholarships,” Deputy Site Project Director Kliss McNeel said.
Baker wants to become a travel nurse and is considering pediatric nursing. Her decision to pursue nursing became a resolution after a family member was hospitalized, and she saw nurses helping him behind the scenes.
“I’ve always liked being around kids and loved helping people.” Baker said. “I’m just very thankful to be given this opportunity.”
Information Technology Project Manager Jean Paul White said the candidates carried themselves well.
“The best part is that we are making a difference for young people and there’s no saying how far that ripple effect will go,” White said.
After taking a psychology class in her junior year of high school, Allen said she would like to become a psychiatrist. She added that she wants to leave a lasting impression on the people she meets.
“A big thanks for picking me–I appreciate you helping me move on to the next level,” Allen said.
The FBP Diversity Council was started in 2017 and is designed to connect a diverse workforce to the business practices and the management at the Portsmouth Gaseous Division Plant and to promote Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) on-site and in the community. To promote a more diverse workforce, the FBP Diversity Council created a scholarship for students in the local area who will be receiving further education at a trade school, technical college, community college, or university.
