Huntington Falls To Eastern Meigs In D-6 Baseball District Final

Following a 3-0 Huntington Huntsmen lead after three innings, top seed Eastern Meigs exploded for eight fourth inning runs en-route to a 9-6 Division 6 District Championship Saturday at VA Memorial Stadium.

The Huntsmen struck for two runs in the top of the first inning with a lead-off walk by Seth Throckmorton, followed by a Jr. McDonald single, an Eastern Meigs throwing error, a Brayden Elliott fielders choice, and Landon Lowery reached on an error. for the 2-0 advantage.

Huntington added one run in the top of the third inning on an RBI triple by Throckmorton, followed by and RBI single by McDonald for the 3-0 lead.

Huntsmen starting pitcher Andrew Oyer threw shut-out ball through three innings, but it was the bottom of the fourth inning when the Eagles started to fly, scoring eight runs on five hits, and benefitted from three base on balls, including one with the bases loaded, in that frame.

Trailing 8-3, Huntington responded with three runs in the top of the sixth inning when Jr. McDonald singled then advanced to second on a passed ball, Matthew Jordan walked, Brayden Elliott drove in a run on a sacrifice fly making is 8-4. Landon Lowery clubbed an RBI triple to make it 8-5, then Frankie Hirsch brought home another run with a fielders’ choice for an 8-6 score.

Eastern Meigs tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning and held on in the top of the seventh for the 9-6 victory.

Eastern Meigs’ Brady Rockhold went the distance for the win, scattering five hits and striking out six Huntsmen.

The (21-7) Eagles had 9 runs/13 hits/2 errors, while (16-9) Huntington had 6 runs/5 hits/3 errors.

Earlier in the day in the D-6 District Semis, the Southeastern Panthers scored early and often in a 13-6 win over Symmes Valley, and advance to the 5pm Sunday district title game against Waterford, who blanked Eastern Brown 8-0.
