Late Board Member To Be Honored at Lucy Hayes Heritage Center Annual Meeting

Article Presented By Advanced Services…

(Chillicothe) – The Friends of the Lucy Hayes Heritage Center Annual Meeting for 2023 will be held Saturday, June 24th between 1pm-3pm.

The brief business meeting will cover a few annual items for members to vote on, followed by light refreshments – including “Lemonade Lucy’s” drink.

The event is free and the public is welcome, where you can also view the newly installed stone memorial bench, dedicated for “late” board member Melody Smith, as well as their “First Ladies Library”, largely accumulated by David Tillis.

The World Heritage designation for the “Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks” is coming this fall, and it is expected to greatly increase local tourism. At the annual meeting, Melody Young, director of the Chillicothe Convention & Visitors Bureau, will speak on what that means for the community in general, and for the Lucy House.

Lucy Ware Webb was born in Chillicothe in 1831 in the wood frame house, now the “Lucy Hayes Heritage Center” at 90 West 6th Street. She married Rutherford B. Hayes in 1852, who went on to serve in the Civil War, and serve as governor of Ohio and president of the U.S.  Lucy was the first college-educated president’s wife, and the first to be referred to as the “First Lady” during her husband’s term.
