Miami Trace QB, Robinette to Play for the Buckeyes

Article presented by Accurate Heating, Cooling and Plumbing

Trey Robinette is headed to Ohio State as a preferred walk on at quarterback.

“I don’t think it’s entirely sunk in yet” Robinette told Litter Media via text Friday. “But once I get on campus I think that’s when it will.”

The 6-4 three-year starter had committed to West Liberty State after his senior season, but that all changed when he received a call from the defending NCAA National Champion Buckeyes.

So, how did it all happen? Panthers head coach Jerry Williams said “Good things happen to people that stay the course. Trey was not heavily recruited due to the NCAA portal. D1 teams didn’t want developmental prospects due to the reduction in the rosters,” said Williams. “Now the 105 rule was not instituted this season, Trey was the perfect position to get picked up by OSU.”

Robinette first caught the eye of former OSU Offensive Coordinator Chip Kelly who attended a Miami Trace practice in 2024. “I spoke with Coach Kelly after one of our early morning practices and (Kelly) told me he’d stay in touch with me about a PWO. Then after a couple of weeks, the ruling came. That basically took that spot away and we though that was pretty much the end of it. But now they’ve changed that ruling, so this all was kind of a surprise for us.”

Kelly left the Buckeyes for the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders following their National Championship run in January. Brian Hartline now fills that position.

Robinette will be the fifth quarterback in a room filled with talent at the position at Ohio State. Julian Sayin and Lincoln Kienholz saw the most action in the Buckeyes’ Spring Game back in April with true freshman Tavien St. Clair getting some reps as well. “Their room is obviously very talented” said Robinette. “So I’m excited to learn from them and get better every day.”

Robinette says he’s been an Ohio State fan. “And now I’m blessed to be a Buckeye.”
