(Chillicothe) – The Ross County Health District (RCHD) is informing residents within the following areas of the county that mosquito spraying will occur on September 3, 2025, after 8pm, as a result of mosquito collection traps testing positive for West Nile Virus (WNV). In case of rain or high winds, spraying will be rescheduled for the evening of September 9, 2025.
Areas within the following townships will receive adulticide spray: Concord, Green, Harrison, Huntington, Springfield, and Union Townships
Areas within the City of Chillicothe that will receive adulticide spray: Parts of Wards 3, 4, 5, and 6
The health department will be spraying Duet, an adulticide mosquito control product. The EPA has evaluated Duet and has approved the product for use in ground and aerial application in outdoor residential and recreational areas. When used correctly, this treatment will not harm people, pets, animals, or the environment.
The Health District has checked Field Check/Bee Finder and has not noticed any bee hives registered in the area. Bees and pollinators are not likely affected as they are not active during the evening hours.
If you wish to opt out of the adulticide activity in the area in front of your home, please contact the Ross County Health District at (740) 775-1158 or send an email to eh@rosscountyhealth.orgby 4:30pm on the day of spraying.
All residents are urged to protect themselves from mosquito bites. The most effective prevention is to dump standing water where mosquitoes breed. Make sure your property is free of stagnant water in flowerpots, bird baths, tarps, gutters, and other places where water can collect. Avoid going outdoors from dusk to dawn when mosquitoes are most active. If you do go out, wear light-colored, long-sleeved clothing and apply an EPA-registered insect repellent.
It is not uncommon for a mosquito to test positive for WNV. There are no vaccines to prevent or medications to treat WNV in people. Fortunately, 8 out of 10 people who contract WNV do not develop symptoms. About 1 in 5 people who are infected develop a fever and other symptoms such as headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash. About 1 out of 150 infected people develops a serious, sometimes fatal illness.
