October Events at OU-Chillicothe To Celebrate Hopewell Culture

Article Presented By Classic Brands…

(Chillicothe) – Join the Friends of Hopewell Culture National Historical Park and Ohio University Chillicothe for two events in October that will highlight the Hopewell Culture in the area.

The Hopewell Culture Marietta Earthworks: New Information and Insights will be held at 6:30pm on October 14th in Room 110 of Bennett Hall on the Ohio University-Chillicothe Campus. This special presentation will be by Wesley Clarke, Collections Manager and Archaeologist at The Castle Museum. A registered professional archaeologist, Clarke brings deep expertise in historiography, art history, and material culture analysis. His work blends rigorous scholarship with compelling storytelling, offering fresh insights into the past through thoughtful interpretation and preservation.

Discovering Hopewell Lifeways: A Special Presentation will be October 22nd at 7pm, inside OU-Chillicothe’s Stevenson Center. Dr. Tim Everhart, Acting Director of Resource Stewardship, will share groundbreaking findings from the first three field seasons of the Hopewell Lifeways Project. This collaborative research—conducted alongside citizens and representatives from four federally recognized Tribes—aims to deepen our understanding of the everyday lives of those who built the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks. In addition, Park Superintendent Chris Alford will provide an update on current improvement projects underway at Hopewell Culture NHP, highlighting efforts to enhance visitor experience and preserve these nationally significant sites.
