Article Presented By Pickaway Ross CTC Adult Education…

(Columbus) – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Geological Survey is celebrating Earth Science Week from Sunday, October 12, through Saturday, October 18. A series of special programs will be offered throughout Ohio and will coincide with the annual national celebration.

“Earth Science Week is an incredible opportunity for Ohioans to learn more about geoscience and how it connects with our daily lives,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz. “The week of programming and events ODNR staff has planned for the week will be an exciting way to spread the message of conservation for Ohio’s future.”

The theme for Earth Science Week 2025 is “Energy Resources for Our Future” and encourages us to become informed energy consumers and to actively work towards a sustainable future that ensures a high quality of life for generations to come.

ODNR geologists will lead a variety of events throughout the week. This year’s events include:

  • Saturday, Oct. 11:
    • Geology Hike, Shawnee State Park, West Portsmouth
  • Sunday, Oct. 12:
    • Guided Fossil Collecting, Caesar Creek State Park, Waynesville
    • Geology Hike, Honey Run Highlands, Howard
  • Wednesday, Oct. 15:
    • Fossil Tour, Ohio Statehouse, Columbus
  • Saturday, Oct. 18:
    • Geology Hike, Shale Hollow Park, Delaware

“Earth Science Week 2025 reminds us that Ohio’s energy future depends on the choices we make today,” said Mark Jones, ODNR Division of Geological Survey Chief and State Geologist of Ohio. “The Ohio Geological Survey stands ready to serve Ohioans by providing the earth science information and data to inform wise decision-making regarding Ohio’s energy future.”

Complete program information for all Earth Science Week is available at ohiodnr.gov.

In addition to the events, a limited number of Earth Science Week teacher toolkits are available for Ohio educators. The toolkits include experiment instructions, a calendar, posters, activity sheets and more materials for teachers to use in the classroom. Toolkits are free (but require $5 shipping) for any Ohio teacher, including home-school teachers, while supplies last. Teacher toolkits, maps, and other publications can be ordered by contacting the Geologic Records Center at (614) 265-6576 or geo.survey@dnr.ohio.gov.

Ohio’s cities and rural areas offer many activities you can also enjoy on your own. Educators, students, and the public are encouraged to explore Ohio’s natural history at a location near them. Resources for those outings can be found here.
