
Penwell Named New Paint Valley Football Coach

The Paint Valley Bearcats have a new head football coach, hiring John Penwell to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Corey Dye, who is now defensive coordinator at Miami Trace.
John Penwell has been an assistant coach at Paint Valley since 2021, serving as defensive coordinator in 2023-24. Penwell told Litter Media– “It’s an honor and privilege to be part of the SVC and Paint Valley Football Tradition.”
Penwell has other head coaching experience, leading the Adena Warriors between 2016-2020 and taking them to the playoffs each season between 2018-2020. While at Adena, Penwell led the Warriors to the 2020 SVC Gold Football Championship, the school’s first-ever playoff wins, and was named SVC, District and Division VI Coach of the Year. His career coaching record is (30-21). Prior to becoming head coach at Adena, he was an assistant coach there between 1998-2006.
John Penwell graduated from McClain High School in 1990, played college football at the University of the Cumberlands. He later coached Whitley County, Kentucky in 1995, Trimble County, Kentucky between 1996-97. He served as assistant coach at McClain between 2007-2016 as their defensive coordinator.
