(Ross County) – The Pioneer Center recently partnered with the YMCA of Ross County to host iCan Swim Camp, a week-long program designed to teach water safety skills to individuals with disabilities, ages three and up. Operated by the national organization iCan Shine, the camp focuses on building confidence, strength, and lifesaving swimming skills.
“Children with certain disabilities face a higher risk of drowning,” said Amy Beeler, Superintendent of the Pioneer Center. “Offering swim lessons is not only about learning to swim—it’s about helping children gain independence, confidence, and resilience.”

This year’s camp welcomed 30 participants and featured small class sizes, personalized instruction, and one-on-one support from trained swim buddies. Thanks to sponsorship by the Pioneer Center, the camp was provided at no cost to families. Participants also received take-home water safety supplies, including flotation noodles and life jackets.

“The demand for this camp is always high,” said Trish Wallace, Community Inclusion Coordinator at the Pioneer Center. “We’re thankful for the continued support of our board and local community, who recognize the importance of offering inclusive programs like iCan Swim here in Ross County.”
The Pioneer Center, otherwise known as Ross County Board of DD (RCBDD), exists for the purpose of improving the quality of life for citizens who have a developmental disability. RCBDD is committed to providing quality services that give individuals and their families choices that enhance community participation and achieve a life of increasing capabilities.
