U.S. President Joe Biden has announced he’s dropping his bid for re-election in 2024. That announcement was made Sunday afternoon on his “X” post.
The President stated he will remain in office until the end of his term, which runs through January 20th, 2025.
“While it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term. “I will speak to the Nation later this week in more detail about my decision.”
President Biden said he supports Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democrat Party nomination, which is likely to be decided at their National Convention in August.
“My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”
This is the latest date that a sitting U.S. President has announced they would not run for re-election. President Lyndon Johnson announced he would not seek re-election on March 31st of 1968, while President Harry Truman made a similar decision on March 29th of 1952.
