Rare Meeting Between Cross-Town Schools Sees West Edge Portsmouth For D-3 Girls Hoops Crown

The Portsmouth Lady Trojans and Portsmouth West Lady Senators had not played each other on the basketball floor in recent memory, but their Saturday D-3 District Championship match-up turned into a great contest. West rallied from a double-digit deficit to claim the school’s first-ever district girls basketball title, 51-47.
Portsmouth stormed out of the gate to leads of 9-0 and 12-2. They led 17-9 after one quarter and 25-18 at halftime. West trailed 27-18 early in the third quarter, then went on a 12-2 run to take their first lead of the game at 30-29 with 3:20 left in the period.
From that point on, both teams traded leads numerous times, settling at 36-36 to end the third quarter. The Lady Trojan’s last lead was at 45-44, before West grabbed the lead back at 47-45. Portsmouth’s Sienna Allen tied the game at 47-47 on a drive to the basket with 1:00 remaining in the game, and failed to score the rest of the contest as the Lady Senators closed on a 4-0 run to win the title 51-47.
West was led by Lexi Deaver’s 17 points, followed by Emma Sayre’s 11 points and 10 from Sydney McDermott. Maelynn Howell had 7 points and 14 rebounds, while two other players combined for 6 points.
Portsmouth, who had only 6 roster players, lost two to fouls and finished with four players in the closing minute. Portsmouth’s Sienna Allen led all players with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Daysha Reid added 13 points and Savannah Cantrell 10 points and 10 rebounds. KK Mays had 2 points before fouling out.
West shot 18/42 from the field- including 5/14 from the arc for 43%. Portsmouth shot 21/42- including 7/22 from the arc for 50% from the field. West was 9/20 at the foul line and Portsmouth was 9/12 at the charity stripe.
West collected 31 rebounds to 25 for Portsmouth. Both team did well in their floor game, with West committing only 7 turnovers and Portsmouth 6.
West improves to (24-1) and will play (24-0) North Adams at 8pm March 1st in the Logan Regional Semis. Portsmouth closes the season at (19-6), returning all six of their varsity players next season.
