Regional Bound: Shermans Beat Waverly 56-32

Article presented by PRCTC Adult Education

The Unioto Shermans overcame a slow start to roll past Waverly 56-32 in the Boys D-IV District Final at The Convo Thursday night.

Waverly opened with a 6-2 lead, but Blake Hoops gave the Shermans a 7-6 lead on a pair of free throws at 1:49 in the first period. The Tanks closed the quarter on a 10-0 run and never surrendered the lead the rest of the game.

After the awards ceremony, Shermans head coach Matt Combs praised Waverly’s efforts to start the contest.

“I thought Coach (Kyle) Bradley did a good job with his game plan, because he had some other guys bring the ball up the floor to alleviate Jaxon (Zickafoose) and Caden (Cutright) doing all the damage they usually do” said Combs on Litter Media RADIO. “Probably slowed the tempo in the first half so we weren’t able to get runnin’. It does always start with our defense. When we’re at our best, we’ve got to really defend and obviously, as we go on now, you’re gonna have to play really good defense all the time.”

Unioto forced Waverly into 18 turnovers on the night and earned 16-points from those turnovers. The Shermans built a 27-14 lead by halftime. Following an evenly played third period, Unioto closed out the game out a 13-4 final period.

Blake Hoops paced a well-balanced Unioto attack with 16-points. Cutright and Zickafoose had 10-points each while SVC Player of the Year, Blake Fitch and KB Perkins had 9 apiece.

Sawyer Myers led the Tigers with 10-points. Waverly finished its season at 10-16.

Up next, Unioto (22-3) will face the winner of Sunday’s Buckeye Valley-Caledonia River Valley game from the Central District. The Regional Semi-Final will be played at The Convo on Thursday, March 6th at 6pm. The other half of the Regional features New Lexington and the winner of Sunday’s Marysville-Indian Valley game. New Lexington took top-seeded Meigs in overtime Thursday night at OU, 60-53. The two had played to a 48-48 tie through regulation.
