On Tuesday, Ohio Representative Mark Johnson (District 92, R) introduced a bill to name the bridge spanning the Scioto River on Ohio 207 in the memory of Correctional Officer Andrew Lansing, who was killed by an inmate at Ross Correctional Institution on Christmas Day of 2024. House Bill 651 proposes to name the bridge “Sgt. Andrew Lansing Memorial Bridge”. The bill now heads to the House Committee for review.
Last November, Representative Johnson and co-sponsor Phil Plummer (District 39, R) introduced House Bill 338, also known as “Andy’s Law” in response to Lansing’s death.
The Andy’s Law was passed by the Ohio House and has now been introduced to the Ohio Senate for review. The law enhances the protection of correctional facility employees and reduces inmate drug possession within Ohio Prisons.
In a news release in November, Johnson commented “This is a great first step to restoring respect to our officers and to reward good behavior within the inmate population. We have placed a large focus on getting drugs out of our prisons, it’s hard to rehabilitate an addict.”
Plummer added “This bill will make it very clear that inmates assaulting Corrections Officers will no longer be tolerated.”
Another piece of legislation Johnson introduced earlier this month would create a license plate featuring the Chillicothe Paints. House Bill 618 is now being reviewed by the House.
