(Lancaster) – The Ohio Rail Development Commission (ORDC) has approved a $150,000 grant to Cirba Solutions to install a new rail spur at its Lancaster, Ohio facility. The new spur will help facilitate the delivery of bulk raw materials to the site.
Cirba Solutions is a battery recycling company operating five facilities across the US. The company processes lithium, lithium-ion, and alkaline batteries and has capabilities across its US footprint to shred and recycle approximately 15 million pounds of batteries per year. They also provide logistics and program management solutions to the battery recycling industry. Cirba Solutions previously invested approximately $250 million to expand the facility in Lancaster. An additional expansion is planned which will continue the company’s commitment to Lancaster and add further manufacturing capabilities to the facility with a proposed incremental investment of more than $200 million.
The proposed rail project will install five storage tracks to the east of the facility. Each storage track will have space to accommodate six cars. A pipe rack will also be installed in the facility to load and unload some of the materials. The rail installation will include a rail scale on a new siding off the Indiana & Ohio Railway (a subsidiary of Genessee & Wyoming, Inc.) mainline, just north of Cirba Solutions’ facility.
“It is always our goal to support our partners at Indiana & Ohio Railway and the Lancaster Port Authority to promote investment and employment opportunities in the region. This project will greatly enhance the fluidity of railroad operations at the Lancaster facility. Cirba Solutions’ growth and success in the region is a testament to their commitment toward the future,” said Matthew Dietrich, Executive Director, Ohio Rail Development Commission.
Kraig Houser, Director, Process Technology, Cirba Solutions, said “Cirba Solutions is grateful to have the support of the ORDC and relevant rail stakeholders in setting up a reliable supply chain for critical minerals production in Ohio. Cirba Solutions’ intention to utilize existing rail infrastructure will provide meaningful economic benefits to a closed-loop and safe supply chain. We look forward to further collaboration with the ORDC and the community as the project continues to develop.”
