PIKETON, OH – On the heels of building the state’s first 100% solar-powered community garden, Watch Me Grow Ohio is ready for their next challenge, the Fruitful Futures Project. The Southern Ohio Cleanup Company (SOCCo) recently donated $2,500 to help the program establish Portsmouth’s first and only fruit orchard.
“Supporting Watch Me Grow Ohio is an investment in the community that will make an impact for decades to come,” said SOCCo Project Manager Pat Timbes.
In a neighborhood where fresh affordable produce is scarce, the Fruitful Futures Project will provide fruit at a fraction of the cost of grocery stores. The program will also create as many as five new jobs for local young adults.
“I’m incredibly proud of our track record, in addition to our new community garden we also continue to provide a positive path for young people,” said Watch Me Grow Ohio Executive Director Drew Carter. “By keeping them engaged in meaningful work we can help steer them away from trouble and towards a brighter future.”
Watch Me Grow Ohio has provided free youth and community programs through sustainable agriculture and community engagement since 2018.
