Spruell Fans 22 In No Hitter As Hillsboro Claims 4th Straight FAC Softball Crown

Hillsboro junior pitcher Camryn Spruell starred on the mound and at the plate as the Lady Indians claimed their 4th straight FAC Softball Championship in an 8-1 win over county rival McClain, Monday at Hillsboro High School. It was also Hillsboro’s 39th consecutive FAC victory.
Three of the four straight titles have been under Coach Gary Breeden.
Spruell fired a no-hitter, striking out 22 batters in her pitching role and also hit a two-run homer. It is Spruell’s fourth career no-no, with two of those being perfect games.
The statistic of 22 strikeouts is a bit unusual, considering there are only 21 outs in a seven inning game. But two pass balls on McClain batter strikeouts allowed two runners to reach base. McClain’s lone run scored on a Hillsboro throwing error in the infield that gave the Lady Tigers an early 1-0 lead in the second inning.
Hillsboro took control of the game scoring four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Those runs crossed the plate on an RBI double by Halle Reveal and an RBI single from Eowyn Brown for a 2-1 lead. Camryn Spruell then followed with a line-drive two-run homer over the left center field fence for a 4-1 Hillsboro lead.
The Lady Indians added to that lead thanks to a fifth inning three home run by Chloe Roberts for a 7-1 advantage. Hillsboro made it 8-1 in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Brown.
Hillsboro will try to complete a (10-0) FAC season when they see the Lady Tigers again, traveling to Greenfield on Tuesday.
It’s been quite a season for Spruell. Camryn has 271 strikeouts thus far this year. Sometime during the next three games she will reach 300 strikeouts for the season, which is quite a feat in my mind. She is also batting .475 with 10 home runs.
Hillsboro Softball’s undisputed softball championship was one of a half dozen conference titles decided Monday.
Unioto Softball also won the undisputed SVC with a 9-8 win over Westfall. The Lady Shermans now aim for the Gold Ball in their final SVC game Wednesday.
Wheelersburg Softball won the SOC 3 Championship with a 14-3 decision over South Webster as the two-time defending state champs have now won an unbelievable 145 straight SOC games.
Wheelersburg Baseball claimed the SOC crown with a 3-2 win over South Webster, and Bloom Carroll wrapped up their third MSL Buckeye Baseball Championship in the last four seasons with an 8-1 win over Logan Elm.
