Sweet 16 Bound Waverly Sets Early Tone vs Jackson; Milestone for Trey-2K Robertson
Presented by Hometown-Motors, Inc.
Waverly stepped on the hallowed floor of Larry Jordan Gymnasium with a mission in its D-II District Final with neighboring Jackson.
The Tigers had reaching the Regionals at the Convo in Athens as a goal for its season. Thanks to defensive pressure and a relentless offensive attack in the opening period, that dream is reality.
Waverly came out of the gates cranking on all cylinders, opening a 9-0 lead. Before the Ironmen knew it, they were down 21-2. The Tigers closed out the quarter with a 27-6 lead.
“That’s what we wanted to do” said Waverly’s Travis Robertson. “When you have a group like I don, that you can rely on, and make sure they show up as a group – I’m pretty fortunate with that.”
The second period is one Trey Robertson won’t soon forget. He tallied points 2,000 and 2,001 one on an alley-oop from Mark Stulley on a backdoor drive 1:08 before halftime to give him 24 points before the break.
“I came in, I just wanted to win” Trey Robertson said of crossing the 2,000 point barrier. “That’s not what we’re here for – we’re here to cut down these nets and keep winning. I’ve always dreamed of doing it, I couldn’t have done it without anyone helping me . These guys in the locker room and everybody have been such a great help – it’s not just me, it’s them, too.”
The tone set by Waverly had Jackson sinking in a hole the Ironmen simply couldn’t climb out of. The top-seeded Tigers had tamed the darling of the Southeast 1 Bracket by 30 at halftime.
The Ironmen weren’t able to overcome Waverly’s quick start.
Evan Jarvis quietly dropped in 15 points to lead Jackson, but where Boston Campbell, Logan Miller and Drew Bragg combined for 46 points in their upset over Logan Elm last Saturday managed just 17-points.
Meanwhile, Robertson kept finding the basket for 30 points to lead all scorers. Wade Futhey netted 15 and Braylon Robertson dropped in 12.
Waverly will face the winner of Saturday’s McClain/Sheridan contest on Thursday at 8pm at The Convo.
The Southeast 2 Bracket District Final tips off at 7pm Saturday after being moved to Saturday to accommodate Sheridan fans. The Lady Generals were battling Warren in the Girls D-II Regional Final at Zanesville HS Friday. Their 55-40 win sends Sheridan to the State Final Four in Dayton next week.
For the Tigers, it’s back to Athens where they suffered a devastating loss in 2020 as the pandemic put a hold on the season for everyone.
