Huntington’s Allison Basye has been named SVC Player of the Year for a third straight year as she leads the list of All SVC Girls Basketball selections, voted upon by the conference coaches.

Basye’s talents were on full display Tuesday with 36 points and a last second three-pointer to lift Huntington over SVC champ Adena.

Adena’s Andrew Day and Huntington’s Kyle Uhrig share the Coach of the Year honors. Day led Adena to their second straight SVC title, while Uhrig quickly righted the Lady Huntsmen’s poor start after losing their first four games, to get them well above the .500 mark by the end of the regular season, including a win over 50-47 win at Adena Tuesday.

Adena Closes Win at Unioto With Clutch Free Throws

Presented By Atomic Speedway

The Lady Warriors of Adena avenged their lone SVC basketball loss of the season in a 56-48 win at Unioto Thursday, to hang-on to sole possession of first place.

While Adena Coach Andrew Day says they have been a poor foul shooting team throughout the season, it was the charity stripe that helped put the game into the win column. The Lady Warriors were 14/21 for the game and made 9 of their last 10 attempts.

The game was close through the first three quarters with a 10-10 first quarter. Adena’s biggest first half lead of 20-16 was closed to 22-21 at halftime.

The two-shade blue built a 32-25 lead with 3:13 remaining in the third quarter, only to see Unioto storm back to close the score to 35-33 at the end of the period.

But Adena’s Emma Garrison, who led all players with 27 points, hit back-to-back three pointers for a 41-33 lead that was followed by a Unioto timeout with 7:15 left in the game.

The Lady Shermans went on a 5-0 run and got to within 41-38 and after falling behind 49-40, rallied one last time with a 7-0 run to close the gap to 49-47 on an Alexis Betts three pointer with 2:57 left. But things turned the wrong direction for Unioto when they missed an inside shot attempt that was followed with Avery Miller fouling out with under three minutes to play.

Less than one minute later with Adena up 50-48, “Garrison and Company” pulled away to close on a 6-0 run for the 56-48 victory.

Emma Garrison’s 27 points was one of two Lady Warriors in double figures as Makaela Lovely added 10. Cheyanne Ater added 8 points, Jadyn Smith, Sydney Foglesong and Caelan Miner each scored 3 points and Sydney Ater with 2. Foglesong controlled the boards with a game high 16 rebounds.

Unioto’s Amelia Uhrig scored 13 points while Avery Miller and Addison Mohan each scored 12. Ameris Betts scored 7 points.

Adena stats saw them shoot 20/47 for 43%- including 2/12 from the arc and the all important foul line of 14/21. Unioto was 19/45 from the field- including 5/8 from the arc, but managed only 5/14 from the foul line and a chilly 1 for their last 8.

Adena controlled the rebounding 39-21, 12 of which were on the offensive glass. Both teams combined for 45 turnovers. The Lady Warriors committed 23.

Adena improved to (8-1/11-2) while Unioto falls to (7-3/12-4). Paint Valley remains one game behind Adena after a 58-18 win over Westfall. PV’s Olivia Smith gained her 1,000th career rebound.

Elsewhere, Huntington edged Southeastern 50-48

Adena Regains SVC Girls Basketball Lead With Win At Paint Valley

Presented By Atomic Speedway

Adena’s Lady Warriors took over sole possession of the SVC girls basketball first place standings with a 53-42 win at Paint Valley Tuesday night.

The win places Adena at (7-1) in the SVC while Paint Valley slips to (6-2), in a virtual tie with (7-2) Unioto, who saw their game with Westfall postponed. Paint Valley was ranked #11 in the latest Division 4 Associated Press Poll coming into the game.

Adena led after the first quarter 14-11 and 29-22 at halftime. The Lady Bearcats outscored Adena 15-7 in the third quarter to grab only their second lead of the game, 37-36 after three periods.

The fourth quarter saw Adena swing the tide back in their direction by picking up their pressure defense along with Paint Valley missing free throw and inside scoring opportunities as the Lady Warriors went on a 17-5 run for the 53-42 victory. The victory is a sweep for Adena over Paint Valley in girls basketball this season, the only two SVC losses for the Lady Bearcats.

Adena’s Emma Garrison led all scorers with 20 points and grabbed 6 rebounds, Jadyn Smith and Makaela Lovely added 10 and 9 points respectively. Cheyanne Ater scored 8 points, Sydney Foglesong added 4 points and Sydney Ater with 2.

Olivia Smith led Paint Valley with 14 points and 9 boards, Averi McFadden added 12 points (8 in first quarter), and Abbi Stanforth scored 8, Hanna Uhrig 5 and Kendall Dye with 3.

Adena travels to Unioto on Thursday, looking to avenge their lone SVC loss of the season, when the Lady Shermans won at Adena prior to the Christmas break.

Both Adena and Paint Valley have games to make up, due to earlier postponed contests.
