Youth Mental Health & Addiction Care Grants Awarded To Area Counties

Presented By Atomic Speedway

(Columbus)—Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has announced that $14.9 million in American Rescue Plan (ARPA) Supplemental Block Grants funds will be used to help strengthen Ohio’s statewide mental health and addiction care services system, specifically in the areas of youth prevention and early intervention services.

“We know that 75% of substance use disorders and mental illness begin before the age of 25, and prevention and early intervention strategies are vital to building resilience and opportunities for long-term health,” said Governor Mike DeWine. “These dollars will make key investments in substance use disorder and mental health prevention programs and treatment services to help Ohioans live their best and healthiest lives.”

“Through close partnerships and collaborations with our community partners, these investments will be targeted in ways that facilitate more responsive, agile, and effective interventions supporting lifelong health and recovery for all Ohioans,” said Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS) Director Lori Criss.

The funds will be distributed over the next four years and are broken down as follows:

Primary Prevention

  • $5M ($1.25M per year) for community coalitions and youth-led programs to address marijuana and alcohol prevention. These funds will be awarded on a competitive basis with a goal of reaching up to 250,000 individuals over the next four years.
  • $5.4M to support public health campaigns designed to enhance the perception of harm of alcohol and marijuana use.

Coordinated Specialty Care for First Episode Psychosis

  • $2.3M to fund two pilot First Episode Psychosis Coordinated Specialty Care Virtual Teams in year two and six additional teams in years three and four. Using telehealth to expand services, specialists at the Ohio State University Early Psychosis Intervention Center (EPICENTER) will provide medication management, psychotherapy, and family support and education. Individuals with first episode psychosis will access specific coordinated specialty care services through their local community mental health center (i.e., case management, education and vocational support and on-site nursing and medication management). EPICENTER will provide training and ongoing consultation.
  • $1.8M to mitigate losses for uncompensated care at 17 existing First Episode Psychosis/Early Serious Mental Illness teams in the following counties: Allen, Athens, Auglaize, Butler, Clermont, Coshocton, Cuyahoga, Delaware, Fairfield, Fayette, Franklin, Gallia, Greene, Guernsey, Hamilton, Hardin, Highland, Hocking, Jackson, Lorain, Lucas, Mahoning, Meigs, Montgomery, Morgan, Morrow, Muskingum, Noble, Perry, Pickaway, Pike, Portage, Ross, Stark, Summit, Trumbull, Vinton, Washington, Wood.
  • $307,926 for the purposes of adopting Healthcare, Outcomes, Network, Education (HONE) developed by Yale University to better collect outcomes on Ohio’s First Episode Psychosis clients.

As part of the ARPA block grant funding, OhioMHAS is also this month releasing $2.98 million in COVID mitigation funds to Ohio’s Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Boards (ADAMH) to be used by boards and community behavioral health providers for COVID testing, PPE purchases, contact tracing, healthy environment maintenance, and other efforts to prevent spread of COVID-19, as well as for behavioral health services for individuals in short-term housing who are at elevated risk of contracting COVID. These are one-time allocations to Ohio’s ADAMH boards for local distribution.

“We know our front-line providers continue to struggle with the effects of the variants of COVID-19, and these funds will help them continue to provide critically needed services safely,” added Criss.

Ohio Supreme Court To Conduct Hearing At Miami Trace School

Presented By Classic Brands

(Columbus)- Twice each year, the Supreme Court of Ohio conducts a Civic Education Program and relocates from the capital city to hold sessions in other Ohio communities. This year, the Civic Education Program is set for Fayette County.

On December 9, Miami Trace hosted an off-site visit from staff members affiliated with the Supreme Court of Ohio.

“Just this week, we received a message from Sara Stiffler, Manager of Civic Education Program for Supreme Court of Ohio, that: Chief Justice O’Connor has selected Miami Trace High School as the location for Fayette County Off-Site Court on April 27, 2022”, according to a social media post from Miami Trace Schools.

“We are both elated and humbled that the Supreme Court of Ohio has chosen Miami Trace Local School District and look forward to hosting in April. This is a unique opportunity for high school students of Fayette
County to learn and have exposure to Ohio’s judicial system. Students from Fayette Christian School, Washington City Schools, and Miami Trace will attend the proceedings and receive the rare opportunity to
participate in the processes leading up to them.”

Curriculum materials, such as summaries of specific cases to be argued, will be provided to teachers and students prior to the session. Attorneys will team with Fayette County educators to review case materials and Ohio’s judicial system. On the day of the court session, selected students will attend a question and answer session with the Justices of the Court, attend one of three oral arguments, and meet with the case attorneys for a debriefing after their assigned case has been argued.

“The Miami Trace Local School District is honored to participate in the Off-Site Court Program and host the Supreme Court of Ohio. We look forward to students of Fayette County joining the more than 32,000 Ohio students who have been granted the opportunity to observe the proceedings of the Supreme Court and interact with justices, attorneys, and court staff.”

Adena Health System & the Future of Healthcare in Fayette County

Presented by Hometown-Motors, Inc.

Watch the news conference here.

Adena Health System and Fayette County Memorial Hospital made their agreement official on Monday which brings FCMH into the Adena Health System. The Washington Court House facility becomes known as Adena Fayette Medical Center.

Adena assumes operation management of the 25-bed critical access facility today (Monday), while the acquisition becomes official on May 2nd, 2021.

“In today’s healthcare landscape, strong, regional networks are vital, and we are excited about Fayette County Memorial Hospital becoming part of our Adena family”, said Adena President and CEO Jeff Graham. “By adding FCMH, we ensure close to home access to critical medical services for the residents of Fayette County and further advance our delivery of care across the region. Our goal is to grow the care here and not to have people leave the county.”

Adena President & CEO Jeff Graham shares what the agreement means for the region.

Graham also set a vision for what the future of healthcare in Fayette County will look like in the coming years, “A key component of this agreement is what the future holds for the physicians, advance practice providers and caregivers at Adena Fayette Medical Center and the residents of Fayette County. Through the course of our due diligence, we looked at the investment needed for the current hospital and it really changed our discussions about the future. And that future involves building a new critical access hospital at the current site. We understand the impact localized healthcare has on a community and how a new hospital drives the local economy. Having facilities that allow new services for patient care.”

Graham says further details around Adena Fayette Medical Center’s construction project will be announced at a later time. The new agreement deepens a collaboration between Adena and FCMH and builds on that existing partnership that started in 2018.

Fayette County Commissioner Jim Garland says the agreement is big for the community. “We are very pleased to come to this agreement with Adena Health System. Adena’s commitment to keeping healthcare local and their demonstrated years of partnership in providing specialty care in Fayette County, we believe presented the best possible outcome for our residents. We look forward to a long, successful relationship.”

Fayette County Commissioner explains the benefits to healthcare for county residents.

Fayette County Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees Chairman Brian Ream said the agreement is a great one for the Fayette County community. Ream says “Financially, the hospital would not exist. We had overtures from other hospital systems and talking to them they said, O yeah, we”ll triage here and send you to Dayton or Columbus. With Jeff and Adena he said- I’m not interested in building more beds in Chillicothe. I want to keep them where they are. And that was a perfect fit for us.”

Brian Ream, Chairman of the Fayette Memorial Board of Trustees talks about the agreement
