Lockwood Commits To Shawnee State University Softball Program

Southeastern High School senior Lexie Lockwood has made her commitment to attend Shawnee State University to play college softball.

Lexie, who made her mark for the Southeastern Panthers as a volleyball player earning SVC Defensive Player of the Year, also has been pretty impressive on the softball diamond each spring as an All SVC player.

Going into her senior season at Southeastern, Lockwood has compiled the following career softball stats: 

.683 batting average 
48 runs scored
18 RBI’s
53 stolen bases
6 doubles
3 triples
1 home run

In the classroom at SSU, Lexie told Litter Media’s Mike Smith that she will be majoring in Radiology. 

IMAP Training Gives Grant Boost for 3 Southern Ohio Schools

(Columbus)—Ohio’s Office of Workforce Transformation has announced that 14 training providers located throughout the state will receive a total of $2.93 million in awards to support 2,336 credentials through the Individual Microcredential Assistance Program (IMAP). Three of these are in southern Ohio, two of which are in Scioto County.

This is the second round of the initiative, which helps Ohioans who are low income, partially unemployed, or totally unemployed participate in a training program and receive one or more technology-focused credential(s) for free.

The selected training providers, which include four-year universities, career centers, and private businesses, will be reimbursed up to $3,000 for each completed technology-focused credential issued.

“IMAP gives individuals the opportunity to earn in-demand, technology skills so they can get higher-paying jobs in a very short amount of time,” said Lt. Governor Husted. “Ohio businesses across all industries need to compete in today’s economy, and this program provides them a pipeline of ready-to-go talent.”

A variety of credential pathways that align with specific job opportunities will be available for individuals including IT Support Specialist, IT Security Associate, IT Networks Specialist, Data Analyst, Web Developer, UX/UI Designer, Robotic Technician, Digital Marketing Specialist, Cloud Engineer, and more. Training will be offered in-person and online, allowing Ohioans to take advantage of IMAP from anywhere in the state.

“Ohio is on the move, and we need more people skilled in high-tech jobs to keep the momentum going,” said Lydia Mihalik, director of the Ohio Department of Development. “These credentials will mean better jobs and more pay for workers.”

Ohio has invested more than $5 million in IMAP over the last two years. The first round of IMAP awarded 11 training providers just under $2.22 million in September of 2020.

Pike Community Action Teams With SSU For Student Loan Workshop

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Financial Literacy Programs of the Workforce & Business Development Program at Community Action Committee of Pike County will be partnering with Shawnee State University to offer an evening workshop reviewing the various options regarding student loan information available to new, current, and graduated students.

This workshop will be held at the OhioMeansJobs Career Center at 941 Market Street in Piketon from 5pm to 7pm on August 18th.  

Tracy Rice, Instructor at Shawnee State will be instructing the workshop covering the types of student loans, the importance of FAFSA, grants, payment options, discharges/forgiveness, and Scholarships. This workshop is no cost to anyone who wishes to attend; however, registration is required.

Former D-1 College Coach Hired As New Shawnee State Women’s Basketball Coach

Shawnee State University has named former Coppin State head coach DeWayne Burroughs as the newest head coach of the SSU women’s basketball program. Burroughs becomes the third person to lead the unit into action in what will be the program’s 34th season of competition.

Burroughs, who played men’s college basketball at Coppin State in the early 1990’s and was later inducted into their Athletic Hall of Famne in 2015. He coached women’s basketball at Coppin State between 2016-20, where he led them to their first-ever Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championship in school history.

Shawnee State’s Delano Thomas Named National Coach Of The Year

(BOSTON, MA) — Shawnee State head coach Delano Thomas is the recipient of the 2021 Don Meyer award.

Thomas led Shawnee State to the program’s first-ever NAIA title, defeating Lewis & Clark in the championship. The Bears finished the season with 27 straight wins and overall record of 31-2.

“What a job turned in by Delano Thomas,” said Joe Dwyer President of CollegeInsider.com. “He returned to the place where he played and has taken the program to new heights. Coach Thomas is a rising star in the profession.”

Having developed Shawnee State into a top-flight contender in less than four full seasons, DeLano Thomas took home Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year honors behind an incredible turnaround that has seen Shawnee State go 44-13 over its last 57 games.

The Don Meyer Award, which is presented annually to the top NAIA basketball coach, is named in honor of the one of the sport’s winningest coaches.

In 38 seasons at Hamline, Lipscomb and Northern State, he compiled an astounding 923-324 record. He led Lipscomb to the NAIA national championship in 1986 and coached the two highest-scoring players in the history of college basketball, John Pierce and Philip Hutcheson. Also, his 1989-90 team at Lipscomb won a record 41 games and was the highest scoring team in college history. In 2010, he received the John Bunn Award at the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Meyer retired from coaching in February 2010. Coach Meyer lost his long battle with cancer on May 18, 2014, at the age of 69.

Shawnee State Wins NAIA National Championship!!

The Shawnee State University Bears made school history Tuesday, winning the NAIA National Championship 74-68 over Lewis-Clark State in their first trip to the (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) Championship Game, held in Kansas City, Missouri.

The Bears were in control most of the game, building a 40-30 halftime lead and led by as many as 12 early in the second half. But late in the game, SSU held-off a rally by Lewis-Clark State, who cut the deficit to 65-62 with 1:37 left in the game.

SSU took care of their business with key free throws and clutch field goals to keep the Warriors at-bay to win the national championship.

Shawnee State had three players in double figures- led by James Jones’ double-double of 27 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Amier Gilmore with 14 and 10 from Miles Thomas. The Bears shot 25/60 from the field- including 11/28 from the arc for a total of 42%. They added 13/18 from the free throw line and grabbed a whopping 52 rebounds, which helped to overcome 17 turnovers.

Lewis-Clark State was led by Damek Mitchell’s 21 points. Two other Warriors were in double figures. LCS shot 24/69- including 10/32 from the arc for 35%. They added 10/15 at the charity stripe and grabbed 24 rebounds. They also committed only 5 turnovers.

After a (4-2) start to their season, the Shawnee State Bears finished on a 27 game winning streak that took them to (31-2) and the NAIA Championship, handing #3 ranked Lewis-Clark State only their second loss of the season (22-2).

Shawnee State Advances To NAIA National Championship Game With 82-77 Win Over St. Francis, Ind.

The Shawnee State University Bears will play in the school’s first mens’ national championship basketball game Tuesday, after taking down Saint Francis, Indiana 82-77 in the NAIA Semifinal Monday night in Kansas City, Missouri.

The Bears will face #3 ranked Lewis Clark State (Idaho) at 8pm, Tuesday. They defeated SAGA, Texas 83-56. Shawnee State is Ranked 5th in NAIA.

SSU had four players in double figures led by Donoven Carlisle’s 19 points, followed by James Jones with 17, Kobie Johnson 14 and E.J. Onu with 10. Nine Bears players scored in the game. Saint Francis had four players in double figures with Antwaan Cushingberry leading with 22 points.

The Bears bench outscored Saint Francis’ bench 41-18.

Shawnee State shot 31/67 from the field- including 10/29 from the arc for 47% and added 10/15 at the foul line.

Saint Francis shot 29/79 from the field- including 13/31 from the arc for 37% and added 6/9 from the free throw line.

Both teams committed 10 turnovers.

Shawnee State improves to (30-2) and goes for the the NAIA crown at 8pm Tuesday.

 

Shawnee State University Headed To NAIA Basketball Final 4

Despite trailing 33-32 at halftime, the Shawnee State University Bears outscored Jamestown, North Dakota 44-32 in the second half for a 76-65 NAIA Elite 8 Championship win, Saturday afternoon in Kansas City, Missouri.

The Bears now play Saint Francis, Indiana Monday in the National Semifinal, also in K.C.

The Bears’ James Jones poured in 31 points to lead all players while Miles Thomas added 10. Nine SSU players got into the scoring column with Donavon Carlisle adding 8 points. A.J. Onu grabbed 12 rebounds for Shawnee State.

Jamestown had three players in double figures, with Mason Walters leading the way in the loss with 20 points.

The Bears shot 28/66 from the field- including a chilly 4/21 from the three-point arc for total of 42%. They added 16/21 from the foul line and had 41 team rebounds while committing 11 turnovers.

Jamestown shot 25/61 from the field- including 5/23 from the arc for 41% and added 10/12 from the charity stripe. They committed 13 turnovers and grabbed 34 rebounds.

The Bears improve to (28-2) and are winners of 25 straight, advancing to the Final Four for the first time in SSU Mens’ Basketball history. It is the first appearance for Shawnee State University in the NAIA Basketball Final 4 since the women’s basketball team got there in 2010-11.

SSU will play Saint Francis, Indiana in the national semis, after advancing with an 89-81 win Saturday over Bethel, Indiana.

Shawnee State Men’s Basketball Continue Record Season

2020-21 has been a historical season for the Shawnee State Bears men’s basketball team and that continued Tuesday with the Bears winning the program’s first Mid-South Conference Championship.

SSU throttled Thomas More 70-54 in the title game, giving the Bears their 22nd straight win and 26th of the season.

Coach DeLano Thomas now has 75 career wins at Shawnee State, with his team’s next stop being the NAIA Opening Round and hopefully the NAIA National Tournament.
