WCH At Paint Valley In Litter Media GOTW

Presented By Rathkamp Financial

The Blue Lions of Washington Court House from the FAC, travel to Paint Valley to face the Bearcats of the SVC in our Litter Media Game of the Week in high school football Friday night.

WCH Coach Chuck Williamson says they got away with some mistakes in Week 1, still getting a victory, but those mistakes caught up with them in a Week 2 loss to a tough Western Brown team, which now make the Blue Lions (1-1).

Paint Valley Coach Cory Dye and two of their assistant coaches are former coaches from WCH, which makes that aspect of this match-up an interesting one.

Coach Chuck Williamson says he’s concerned about the Bearcats athleticism, saying “they have size and the ability to fly around to the ball.”

But, he says the Blue Lions are pretty athletic as well. He says they are an “up-tempo spread team offensively”, adding that they have some “very talented skill guys”, which includes 6’5- 230 pound Tanner Lemaster, who has received D-1 college offers from Michigan State, Indiana, and Tennessee.

The Blue Lions have great strength in their front 11 on both sides of the ball, running a two-platoon system with very few players ever playing both offense and defense.

From Bearcats Coach Cory Dye, he gave the same props to Washington CH, knowing they will be tough to defend. Paint Valley also enters the game at (1-1), winning in Week 1, but suffered a tough loss to state powerhouse West Jefferson in Week 2.

Due to an injury in Week 1, Paint Valley had Cavan Cooper playing running back last week in their loss to West Jefferson and Coach Dye says they expect him to remain in the running back spot against Washington CH, with Dax Estep at quarterback.

Unioto Baseball Tops Huntington To Grab Share of SVC Title With Westfall

Presented By Atomic Speedway

(Watch our video above where Litter Media’s Mike Smith spoke with Unioto Coach Tony Taylor after their co-championship)

The Unioto Shermans earned a share of the 2021 SVC Baseball Championship Tuesday with an 8-3 win at Huntington. The victory enables the Shermans to share the crown with Westfall, who had already clinched a share the week before.

The win also avenged an earlier season loss Unioto suffered at the hands of the Huntsmen on the Shermans’ home diamond.

The Tuesday game picked up in the top of the second inning with Unioto leading 1-0, where the game had been suspended last week due to rain.

The score stayed that way until Unioto broke loose for five runs in the top of the third inning for a 6-0 lead, then added another run in the fourth for a 7-0 advantage.

Huntington got on the scoreboard with a 2-run bottom of the fourth inning to cut the margin to 7-2, only to see the Shermans add an insurance run in the sixth inning for an 8-2 lead.

Huntington pushed across one last run in the bottom of the seventh, before Unioto pitcher Cameron DeBord ended the game by striking out the final Huntsmen at the plate for an 8-3 win.

DeBord was the winning pitcher, working all 7 innings, yielding 6 hits and fanning 9 Huntsmen batters.

The Shermans showed balance in their hitting order, with Braxton Platt being their only multi-hit offensive player with 3 hits in 4 at-bats, driving in 3 runs.

As a team, Unioto had 9 hits in the game and took advantage of 6 Huntington fielding errors in the contest.

The co-championship is Unioto’s 22nd SVC title in baseball.

Unioto improves to an SVC ending (12-2) record to share the title and improved their overall record to (20-4). The Shermans will play a non-conference game with #1 state ranked Miami Trace later this week, which could be a preview of a possible Division 2 District Final showdown between the two teams. Unioto is a #5 seed going into the tournament next week.

Paint Valley Pulls Away From Unioto in 55-29 Win

Tramel Byrd and Cavin Cooper combined for three 3rd quarter touchdowns to power Paint Valley to a 55-29 win at Unioto Friday.

Byrd had 13 lugs for 167 yards to lead the Bearcat attack, which rushed for 365 yards.

The Shermans took the opening drive and scored on a Lucas Hanes field goal to take the early 3-0 lead on homecoming night. Paint Valley answered when Cooper found Beau Blankenship on a TD pass to close out the 1st quarter with a 7-3 margin.

Cordell Grubb rumbled 58 yards for a score and followed with a TD catch from Cooper to put the Bearcats ahead 21-3.

Unioto closed the gap to 21-9 just before halftime on Isaac Little’s pass to Byrd Green with 8.9 seconds left in the half. But Paint Valley came out of the intermission hitting on all cylinders.

Byrd capped a drive to start the second half with the first of his two TDs in the 3rd, a 20-yard run to give the Bearcats a 27-9 lead less than a minute into the quarter.

Unioto answered with a 42yard strike from Little to Maddox Fox to give the Shermans some life. However, the Bearcats had other plans. Cooper picked off a pass for and returned it for a touchdown and Byrd slipped away on a 67-yard run to the Shermans’ five-yard line and then punched it in on the next play to boost the Paint Valley lead to 41-15.

Cooper added touchdown runs of 30 and 40 yards the 4th quarter to put the game out of reach.

The Shermans Newton Hoops hit Fox on a 30-yard TD pass and Cameron Lohnes had a TD run to close out the scoring for the night. 55-29 the final.

Paint Valley improves to 3-1 and Unioto slips to 2-2. The Bearcats will host Zane Trace next Friday. Zane Trace earned a 36-22 win over Southeastern who will head to Unioto next week.

SVC Says If COVID-19 Testing Remains Mandatory, No Contact Sports This Fall

Presented by Hometown-Motors, Inc.

The Scioto Valley Conference released a statement regarding contact sports Wednesday afternoon.

“As of today, there is a Testing Mandate (Covid-19) from the Ohio Department of Health.  As long as this mandate is in place there will be no contact sports.  For the SVC that means soccer and football.”

The release added “If the mandate is lifted, soccer will be played as scheduled.  Football will have a modified schedule.  League games will begin Friday August 28.  League games will continue through Friday October 2.  These six league dates will determine the league championship.  October 9 all SVC schools will  be participating in the State playoffs.  The seventh league game (October 16) will be optional for schools to play or not. As circumstances change, adjusts may need to be made.”
